Biography

Rosa Menkman is Dutch based artist, theorist and curator specialized in the errors and accidents produced from visual artifacts. These artifacts consist of "glitches, compressions, feedback and other forms of noise". [1] Menkman integrates her academic and leisure practices centralizing her study on glitch ecologies. [2]

History of Menkman's Work

Menkman completed her studies in Master of Arts (New Media, 2006) and Research Master of Arts (Media Studies, 2009) both at the University of Amsterdam, Netherlands. During her studies in 2007, she began to explore artifacts of sound and video emphasizing her progression with performance and static art. [3]

The Glitch Moment(um)

In 2011, Menkman’s specificity in the genre and foundations of glitch art was issued as a book, The Glitch Moment(um) (published by The Institute of Network Cultures). The book makes sense of recent glitch art and culture: "technically, culturally, critically and aesthetically and as a genre". [4] In particular, she mentions how viewers need to gain knowledge about glitch culture and its relationship between the technique and culture aspect. [5]

GLI.TC/H

Aside from her art practices, Menkman has co-organized the GLI.TC/H festivals in Chicago (2010, 20111, 2112), Amsterdam (20111) and Birmingham (20111). The founders, Nick Briz, Jon Satrom and Rosa Menkman, work together to develop a gathering inviting various glitch enthusiasts to exhibit and share their work. [6]

Currently, Menkman is concluding her PhD in Cultural Studies at Goldsmiths, London.
