Biography

Oliver Laric is an internet-based artist, born 1981 in Austria, now lives and works in Berlin, Germany. He has educated in University of Applied Arts Vienna (Class of 2007). But as the theme of his work relates to concepts of authorship, truth, original and copy this biography might not be exactly correct. When Domenico Quaranta asked him : "According to my Google searches, you were born in Leipzig and Innsbruck, you are black and Caucasian, and you have said: “I usually give fake CVs when I am asked to give a CV. Recently I started giving real ones.” And now?"

Oliver Laric replied: "I am hiring a writer to develop multiple biographies." [1]

He publishes his artworks online on his website: oliverlaric.com in chronological order. He is also a co-founder of vvork.com that in 2006 together with a group of friends founded. VVORK is an art blog acting as an exhibition space and, occasionally, a curatorial platform that organizes events in brick-and-mortar venues. [2]

Art Works

Oliver Laric’s web-based artistic practice or net art is characterised by the manipulation and reinterpretation of existing cultural images. He operates in a simulacral space where concepts of authorship, truth, presence, original and copy are shown to be obsolete, or at least irrelevant.[3] His art has been deeply rooted in the concept of questioning ownership, with his works over the years not only being interesting and provocative, but also entertaining and humorous at times, as he has made kopienkritik, or ‘copy criticism’ a modern genre and process of his own.[4] In his work Versions he explores how the copy, the bootleg, and the remix have played a part in both historic and contemporary image cultures.
