Neoliberal mothering

From UBC Wiki

According to Reich (2014) neoliberal mothering involves individual choice and personal responsibility.

Reich says this type of mothering requires resources in order to mitigate risks.

Reich develops her concept of neoliberal mothering through interviews with affluent white mothers in the U.S. who forego state-mandated vaccines for their children. These mothers take responsibility for their children's wellbeing and see themselves as more capable and qualified to care for their children's health than medical experts. They believe that they can protect their children from harm through their (imagined) safe communities and by teaching their children to make responsible decisions to avoid risk.
