Database of Abstracts of Reviews of Effectiveness (DARE) is a Full Text database containing critical assessments of systematic reviews from a variety of medical journals. DARE is produced by the expert reviewers and information staff of the National Health Services' Centre for Reviews and Dissemination (NHS CRD) at the University of York, England, and consists of structured abstracts of systematic reviews from all over the world. DARE records cover topics such as diagnosis, prevention, rehabilitation, screening, and treatment.

In Meeting Psychosocial Needs of Women with Breast Cancer, the National Cancer Policy Board of the Institute of Medicine examines the psychosocial consequences of the cancer experience. The book focuses specifically on breast cancer in women because this group has the largest survivor population (over 2 million) and this disease is the most extensively studied cancer from the standpoint of psychosocial effects. This site offers the latest in research, prevention and treatment, with an emphasis on early detection and dispelling common myths.

NOAH -- New York Online Access to Health

This site is a collaborative project of four New York organizations including the City University of New York and the New York Public Library. It is committed to providing relevant, unbiased, and accurate consumer health information to an underserved population. Available in both Spanish and English, the site has information on topics ranging from aging to diabetes to patient rights.

CancerLynx bills itself as an online zine for cancer patients and professionals.

Breast Cancer Action

The contents of this site are excerpts from the Breast Cancer Action newsletter. Breast Cancer Action is a grassroots group: ordinary people who, by educating themselves on the facts and the issues related to breast cancer, have empowered themselves and others to create needed change. A commercial site but with some very good information including information sheets, clinical trials, support groups, news and articles. Also provides survivor stories, reader polls, and information on naturopathy, nutrition and support.

Medscape - Women's Health

The Medscape site offers full-text, peer-reviewed articles, literature reviews, and medical news "for health professionals and interested consumers."

Breast Cancer Prevention Coalition

The aim and focus of the Breast Cancer Prevention Coalition is to ensure that primary cancer prevention (stopping cancer before it starts) - ranks equally with efforts to treat and cure this disease. Includes a link to the Breast Cancer Risk Calculator, which estimates a woman's chance of getting breast cancer.

The Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation is involved in research, education, diagnosis and treatment of breast cancer. Although the site has a number of links to corporate sponsors, it has valuable information on breast cancer research and education, the chat rooms and the calendar of educational and fundraising events.

American Cancer Society

The Cancer Resource Center offers information on the nature of cancer, its causes, and risk factors, the latest strategies for prevention and early detection, new diagnostic techniques, and the latest treatment options. It also provides information about alternative and complementary methods. For newly diagnosed patients the Cancer Profiler can provide information on treatment decisions.

BC Cancer Agency
