Floating form

From UBC Wiki

Summary

Floating Form is a website based art work by Michael Manning with a blank, floating form for the audience to write and submit. The work is entirely web-based, and coded. The receiver of the filled out form is anonymous and the work was created in 2013. The blank forms on white background demonstrates minimalism with simple bouncing movements and simples gestures. The form itself is only consisted of simple, black lines without any other added-on designs.

Technical Components & Interactivity

Because Michael Manning used such a simple concept in creating this art website, the purpose of this work is somewhat straightforward in what the artists intentions were for the interactivity with the audience. The audience feels the urge to click, write, and submit the form when first encountered with this artwork. The artwork also brings out the curiosity and imagination as to if the work can function in any different ways other than the original idea of click, fill-out and submit. And because of the movement of the forms, the viewers are bound to try to click on the right button for the artwork to function.

Emotional Outcomes of The Work

First of all, the human-nature to click and write when seeing a blank form; the urge to interact with Floating Form is what creates the tension between the work and the viewers. This artwork can be utilized as a way to express and write freely and forget about it after sending it away. Because there are possibilities of this artwork being submitted to someone, audience feels that he/she is talking to someone without having to worry about what they are going to think of them. It is a way to escape the reality and let out their thoughts and any other comments and gibberish to whoever is receiving this filled-out form. There is another reason why audience would want to interact with Floating form: the process of mark-making on a blank piece of form/page. We are not too used to the freedom of writing whatever we want on the internet because we know that someone is bound to see it (especially on social media). Through the process of writing on this form and filling it out, the audience can feel the freedom of speech to comment on about anything they desire.
