Instructional Support Requests in the Faculty of Land and Food Systems

Routine support request procedure

Routine course support (eg. course creation, adding privileged users) procedure is for the instructor of record and/or her/his designate to

send requests to LFS Learning Centre Instructional Support <is@landfood.ubc.ca>

or contact LFS Learning Centre

It is a good practice to

include the CWL user names

(not passwords) of any privileged users, and the role for which they should be enrolled. For example, the roles include designer(Build) ability, primary or secondary instructor, teaching assistant, auditor, and student. To help in this decision, please see description of "Available user roles" below:

Nominal turnaround is 1.5 working days.

Available user roles

(From University of Edinbugh) Vista Roles

In order to access a WebCT section, users must be given a role:

  • section instructor
  • section designer
  • teaching assistant
  • student
  • auditor

You can find more details about each of these roles in the sections below. There is no limit to the number of users who can be given each role with a section, but some of the roles are mutually exclusive.

Section designer role

A section designer is the role required to build a course. It enables you to: add tools to the course use the File Manager add content customise the look and feel of the course create assignments create assessments create Web links

Section instructor role

The section instructor role is designed for those teaching the course. It enables you to: present the course manage the course interact with students on the course change assignment and assessment settings grade assignments and assessments

Primary / secondary section instructors

Section instructors may be denoted as being "Primary" which means that their name will appear as an "Instructor" associated with the section in the course list on the myWebCT page. For sections being fed from EUCLID, the Course Organiser will be set as a primary section instructor by default. Other than this the Primary Instructor role conveys no special privileges. If you wish to add or remove someone as a Primary Instructor please contact the IS Helpline.

Teaching assistant role

The Teaching Assistant role can be configured by a Section Instructor (on a section-by-section basis) to enable them to give a subset of their student management functions to others. For example: present the course interact with students on the course grade assignments and assessments For more details on how to configure this role see: customising the Teaching Assistant role

Student role

The student role is designed for those users taking the course. It allows them to: view the course content participate in discussion and chat submit assessments submit assignments receive marks in the Grade Book Student enrolments for many sections in WebCT are automated via data feeds from central Registry systems. As a result Section Instructors are not able to manually add or remove students. In such cases, the Auditor role may provide a suitable alternative.

Auditor role

The auditor role is identical to that of a student except that their activities are not tracked and no marks are recorded in the Grade Book. The Auditor role might be suitable for a member of staff who is acting as a guest contributor, or for external examiners. students who are not formally enrolled on the course guest contributors external examiners
