Reflective Activity

Take 1 minute: Imagine you are going to teach a class of 300-500 learners. Would you attempt to engage a class of 300-500 with participatory activities? How? What particular techniques and methods would you use? What are some particular challenges to teaching large classes?

Watch

Watch the first 4 minutes of the Mazur Video. As as you watch, consider the following points:

  • How does the instructor engage a large group of learners?
  • What is the reaction of the students like? Why do you think they respond that way?
  • What are the benefits and potential downsides to using some of these techniques in your lectures?

Discuss

Post your observations:

  • What participatory techniques can you identify? Name at least 3 (three).
  • What – if any – components of the BOPPPS model were you able to identify in the video?

Now that you have completed the tasks go back to your initial notes:

  • Are your planned participatory techniques similar to those used by the instructors in the videos?
  • Can you take anything from them?
  • Can they take anything from your ideas?
  • What are some expectations you have from this ISW session itself on Teaching Large Classes?
