Session description

Welcome to an Introduction to Canvas!

In this session, we will focus on several key aspects of using Canvas to create an engaging and inclusive learning environment for your students.

Learning outcomes for this Introduction to Canvas session include:

  1. Identify the key features and functionalities of Canvas that can be used to design an engaging and inclusive learning environment for students.
  2. Create an organized and accessible course structure in Canvas that allows students to easily navigate the course materials and find what they need.
  3. Apply best practices for creating inclusive content in Canvas, including creating accessible documents and multimedia, and presenting information in multiple formats.
  4. Use Canvas communication tools, such as announcements and discussion boards, to keep students informed and engaged in the course and foster collaboration.
  5. Create different types of assignments and assessments in Canvas, and set up grading criteria to provide meaningful and timely feedback to students.
  6. Set up the Gradebook in Canvas, including creating grading schemes, viewing and entering grades, and providing feedback to students.

By the end of this session, you will have a solid understanding of how to design an engaging and inclusive course in Canvas, how to use the platform's tools to communicate and interact with your students, and how to assess and grade their work effectively.

Note: This practical workshop introduces participants to the fundamentals of Canvas and explores "next step" ideas. Audience engagement opportunities are built into the session.
