Vector 1: Leading Learning Applications

Find another Open Source application you can share and post it to the Wordpress blog.

Feel free to rate its ease of use and how it might, or might not, be a hidden gem for us all to explore and implement.

Vector 2: Leading Solution Providers

1. Which Open Source software is likely to continue to meet the evolution in the on-learning environment?

2. From your perspective, do you see the Open Source Software in the Content/Learning Management system as being more responsive than proactive?

3.Moot: Open Source Software is a puppet of on-line learning.

Vector 3: Stability and Usability

1. Looking at your personal experience with open source software, how easy/difficult was it for you to use the open alternative. What is your comfort level using open source software (eg. OpenOffice) compared to commercial software (eg. Microsoft Office)?

2. Explore one of the OSS applications that has been described in this OER. Discuss any concerns you would have with using the OSS application you have explored.

Vector 4: Total Cost of Ownership

1. A situation could arise where the total cost of ownership for open source software may exceed that of a proprietary alternative. If that was the case, what reasons would an end user have to use the open source software?

2. Watch the video embedded on How to Survive ICT Budget Cuts, and comment on how the philosophy of openness can help schools reduce technology costs.

Vector 5: The Future Potential of OSS

1. It can seem like Open Source is a new concept that was created with the internet. Where else have the values of Open Source been seen in the past?

2. Martin Dougiamas, the creator of Moodle, could be described as a philanthropist for his work. Does contributing to Open Source Software require one to be altruistic?
