The word "ship" has been the dominant one of the three, but we can see that "boat" takes over "vessel" around the 1920s c) There seems that that "boat" became more popular than "ship" during the time where boat engines became more affordable and small enough to create small, commercial ships rather than big transport vessels. d) It seems that, while "ship" has always been the preferred term to use, "boat" gain traction as more commercially available boats came into the market, making big vessels such as ferries less common on society compared to small, private boats.
