Summary

Description

Women from across Tanzania are attending today's World Food Day event in Kiharaka to tell their stories:

Amina Rashid, a mother of two small children, used to farm a small piece of land with her parents in the village of Kipera. She grew maize and vegetables to feed her family and to sell the surplus for some income. Last year, she says, an investor claimed ownership of a large piece of the village land including Amina’s fields. The investor put up a fence so close to Amina’s house that the toilet they constructed is on the other side of the fence and they can no longer use it. She does not know who the investor is or where they are from, and she was not asked before her land was taken; she has just heard that the investor is a foreigner.

About 500 other small farmers in the village are affected. A dam that holds water for a long time after the rainy season ends is now within the investor's land and villagers can no longer use it for their animals and farming. The villagers' coconut trees are now in the fenced-off area and security guards even prevent them from collecting the coconuts. Amina says the investor has not done anything with the land yet, he is just protecting it.

"We now have more poverty and less food," says Amina. "Without land where will the food come from?"
