TA training/Overview/Physics and Astronomy/Fall Workshop

From UBC Wiki
(Redirected from Fall Workshop)

A 10-hour Fall Workshop, spread over 2 days, is held during the first week of classes and facilitated by the three program coordinators (senior level TAs). Topics of the workshop include:

  • Introduction to the program structure
  • A word from an international TA
  • From Learning to Teaching
  • Teaching by Questioning
  • Learning Goals in the Lab
  • Formative Evaluation
  • Creating Inclusive Classrooms
  • Concluding Reflection

The goals of the workshop are to provide buy-in to research-based pedagogies and learner-centred models of teaching, provide practical tools that all TAs can use in their classrooms immediately, and begin discussion of more complicated issues that may arise in the classroom. In general, we aim to get new TAs excited about their roles as TAs, confident and comfortable to walk into their classroom, and recognize that their development as TAs will be an ongoing process that doesn't end after the fall workshop.
