Guiding Questions:

A) How did you describe the change on Figure #1:Lesion with rolled borders and induration present on epithelium inferior to facial of #3.1,4.1



B) What do you see in Figure #2 and #3? Please describe:Erythroplakia/leukoplakia present on mid-post third of lateral tongue


C) What kind of questions do you ask for your working diagnosis and why they are important to know?

1. Does the client use tobacco products? Smoking is a major contributing factor to leukoplakia/erythroplakia.

2. Does Mr. Harrison drink alcohol? Heavy drinking may be a contributing factor to the lesions present.

3. Does the client have a systemic disease? Diabetes, AIDS, steroid use... is a predisposing factor for Candidiasis and other opportunistic infxns.

4. How long have these lesions been present? If they are caused by trauma, they should heal in a two week period.

5. Has there been any trauma/chronic irritation to these areas? Lesions may be caused by trauma or ill fitting dentures - should be healed by 2 weeks when irritant removed.

6. Does the leukoplakia rub off? It could still be chronic hyperplastic candidiasis if it does not rub off.

7. Does Mr. Harrison have any history of cancer or other medical illnesses?

8. Does Mr. Harrison take any medications or herbal products?

9. Does he have any allergies or sensitivities to medication?

10. How is Mr.Harrison's oral hygiene?

11. How often does he brush and floss?

12. Does he have any habits of grinding or clenching?

13. Does he have a recent blood exam report?

14. When was his last dental visit?

15. Are there any past experiences with this lesion?

16. Does Mr. Harrison use mouthwash? If so what kind?

17. What is Mr. Harrison’s CD count?

18. Is there any pain associated with the lesions?

19. Is there any recent changes to his health (new medications, hospital visits, illnesses)

20. Has there been any changes to Mr. Harrison's diet?

21. Has Mr. Harrison been using any recreational drugs?

22. Have there been any changes to other parts of his body?

23. Any lesions on skin, pain or symptoms else where?

24. Does Mr. Harrison have a family history of autoimmune disease?

25. Has Mr. Harrison had a recent exposure/possible contact with any sexually transmitted diseases or HIV Virus?


D) What is your working diagnosis and why?


E) What is your treatment planning for him?
