Debate Assignment

The Online Debate Forum is a group activity which requires you to collaborate within your team to debate pro or contra an issue covered within the course.

Procedure:

  1. Sign up for Teams (3-4 members per team, depending on class size) and Debate Topics (two teams per debate topic) by July 1st.  To do this, see the Debate Signup Sheet on the course homepage.
  2. As a group, review the relevant information pertaining to your selected topic derived from Section III lessons.
  3. Each team to submit the following documents to a Debate Forum site:
   i) a position statement that is pro or con the issue (1-2 pages of text, 700-800 words) 	Due Sept. 7th 2009 9am
   ii) a rebuttal to the opposing team’s position paper (max. of 500 words) 	Due Sept. 11th 2009 9am
   iii) final rejoinder (max. of 250 words) 	Due Sept. 14th 2009 9am
  4. You will then be given the Evaluation sheet and asked to apportion marks for fellow group members. These sheets will then be submitted to the instructor by email by Sept 14th, midnight.
  5. Your instructor will monitor the submissions, and consult the student evaluation sheets before assigning marks to each of the students who participated in the discussion a week or two after the final rejoinders.
