The UBC Common Look and Feel (CLF) includes a utility toolbar at its very top. On the right side is a search box, which by default searches all of UBC. However, this search box can be configured to search only a subdomain. An example use case is when you want the search result to include only pages from your specific website.

If you use the CTLT's Content Management System, this can be easily configured under "Appearance > Theme Options." When you are at the theme options page, scroll down and find the "Site Specific Search" section. In the text field, you can specify which domain you'd like your search results to come from.

Generally, you want to put your domain name here. Let's say your website is at "website.ubc.ca" - that's what you should put in the text field.

If your website has multiple subdomains, (e.g. subdomain1.website.ubc.ca or subdomain2.website.ubc.ca) specifying "website.ubc.ca" will include results from your subdomains as well.

The UBC web common-look-and-feel has a number of elements. The CLF Base theme makes it easy to configure these elements through its theme options.

== The UBC Common-look-and-feel (CLF) Elements ==

In the header, there are the "A Place of Mind" button, the name of the over-arching unit (such as a faculty), and the name of the website itself. There are a number of options for colours in the header as well.

[[File:Clf-header-wiki-figure.jpg]]

In the footer, there are two sets of contact information. One set is for the over-arching unit, and the other is for the unit itself.

Other CLF elements include the search bar and megamenu dropdown (the "Campuses", "UBC Directories" and "UBC QuickLinks" buttons).

This how-to covers the elements that you must customize, such as the CLF header graphics, the search bar, the "A Place of Mind" button, and the footer contact information.

If you are looking for information about CLF requirements, visit http://www.cardinals.ubc.ca/clf

== CLF Faculty and Unit level headers ==

Find the theme options page under ''Appearance > Theme Options'' in the WordPress Dashboard.

On the "Theme Options" page look for the '''Header Faculty Label''' and '''Header Unit Label''' sections. Here you will find textareas labeled '''Label''' and '''Link to'''. Enter the text you want to appear in your header in the corresponding '''Label''' textarea, using line breaks where necessary. Enter the URL in the '''Link to''' box to specify where you want that button to link.

For example, if you website is for the English department in the Faculty of Arts, enter the following:

Header Faculty Label > Label : "Faculty of Arts"<br>
Header Faculty Label > Link to : "http://www.arts.ubc.ca/"<br>
Header Unit Label > Label : "Department of English"<br>
Header Unit Label > Link to : "http://www.english.ubc.ca/"<br>

Click '''Save Changes''' near the top of the theme options page to apply the changes.

== Search Bar Options ==

On the "Theme Options" page look for the '''Site Specific Search''' section. There is just one field, the '''Domain to search''' field. This setting limits where your search results can come from. A wide domain specifier, like '''*.ubc.ca''' will return any relevant result from all of the UBC.ca domain. A narrow domain specifier, such as '''http://www.calendar.ubc.ca/vancouver/''' will return results only from the '''vancouver''' sub-folder of the calendar.ubc.ca subdomain.

If you are not sure what to put here, it's generally a good idea to use your unit's subdomain, plus a wild card. For example, if your unit's subdomain is olt.ubc.ca, use '''*.olt.ubc.ca'''. This way, all search results from olt.ubc.ca, as well as those from sites.olt.ubc.ca and blogs.olt.ubc.ca will be returned.

== A Place of Mind Dropdown Options ==

On the "Theme Options" page look for the '''Place of Mind Dropdown''' section. There's two options here. One to '''Enable''' or disable the dropdown. When the "A Place of Mind" button is disabled, clicking on the button no longer activates the dropdown, but takes the user directly to the "A Place of Mind" website instead.

The other option is the '''Source Feed Url'''. The "A Place of Mind" dropdown features the latest updates from the "A Place of Mind" campaign via RSS feeds. By default, it grabs the latest blog content at http://www.aplaceofmind.ubc.ca/feed/?cat=-1 , however - you can customized the dropdown by using a feed with a more appropriate theme for your website. The following list shows other RSS feed you can use from the aplaceofmind.ubc.ca site.

== Footer Information ==

On the "Theme Options" page, look for the '''Unit Contact Info''' and '''Faculty or Umbrella Unit Info''' section. Here you can fill out the contact information included in the CLF footer elements. The '''Unit Contact Info''' section appears on the right side of the footer, and is intended for the contact information for your unit. The '''Faculty of Umbrella Unit Info''' appears near the centre of the footer, and is intended for a faculty or an overarching unit above your unit, if one exists.

The CLF Base theme provides a frontpage template with custom frontpage elements, making it easy to achieve common frontpage layouts seen around UBC. The frontpage consists of three main elements - the spotlight rotation, the frontapge widget area, and the content area. To configure your site's frontpage, find the '''Frontpage''' tab in the "Theme Options" page.

The '''Frontpage''' tab has three section of options - the '''Frontpage Layout''', the '''Spotlight Rotation Options''' and the '''Content Area'''.

== Frontpage Layout Options ==

The '''Frontpage Layout''' section lets you control how the three elements of the frontpage - the spotlight rotation, the frontapge widget area, and the content area - will be laid out. The different layouts changes and rearranges where the widget area is placed, as well as the width of the spotlight rotation.

Pick one of the options for your frontpage. If you don't want to use the custom frontpage elements, select "Default Frontpage" - your frontpage will then use the default page layout.

== Spotlight Rotation Options ==

The '''Spotlight Rotation Options''' controls the spotlight rotation. Start by specifying the category of posts you wish to see in your spotlight rotation. Generally it is a good idea to create a category like "Spotlight" or "Featured" that makes it easy to identify posts which you want to feature on your spotlight.

Other options in this section lets you control the look-and-feel of the spotlight, as well as details such as the number of slides, the duration and transition length.

By default, the spotlight rotation is set to use the UBC-style spotlight (as seen on UBC.ca.)

== Content Area Options ==

The '''Content Area''' options allows you to put arbitrary text & HTML in the content area of the frontpage. In addition to that, you can also split the content area into a maximum of five columns, placing different content in each of them. Through these columns you can achieve a variety of frontpage layouts.

== Frontpage Usage Tips ==

1. Use the '''Tabbed Section Widget''' - To emulate the tabbed sidebar look seen on UBC.ca's right sidebar, use the "Tabbed Section Widget" by placing it in the '''Frontpage Widget Area'''. This is done under Appearence > Widgets.

2. Include dynamic content via RSS using the '''feed shortcode''' - You can include dynamic content via RSS using the '''feed''' shortcode in any content area or section widget. The syntax for using a feed shortcode is [feed url="yourRSSurl"]

The UBC web common-look-and-feel has a number of elements. The CLF Base theme makes it easy to configure these elements through its theme options.

== The UBC Common-look-and-feel (CLF) Elements ==

== Search Bar Options ==

The other option is the RSS feed URL.

== Search Bar Options ==
