A bibliographic citation is a reference that points towards a specific source of information.

A complete citation provides all the pieces of information that you need to track down a source that has been referenced in a book or article you read, or assigned as part of your class readings.

It is important to be able to distinguish between citations to different types of information sources (e.g. books or journal articles), because you need to use different strategies to locate different kinds of materials.

You can identify common types of citations by the information elements that they contain. While some elements are common to most citations (such as the author/creator of the work and the date of publication), other elements provide clues about the kind of information source that is being cited.

Don't rely on ''italics'' or '''bolding''' to identify an element. Each type of citation can be formatted in different ways, depending on which [https://help.library.ubc.ca/evaluating-and-citing-sources/how-to-cite/#MajorStyles-3 citation style] is being used.

'''Tip:''' If your citation has an abbreviated journal title (e.g., Bull at Sci, J. Appl. ====Troubleshooting Checklist:====

:1. Check your connectivity: make sure that your internet service provider is working.

:2.
:3. If you can't log in using your [https://ilsauth.library.ubc.ca/login/help.php Library barcode and PIN], you might have a Library PIN problem. Call the Library's Borrower Services division at 604-822-2406. [http://services.library.ubc.ca/borrowing/library-account/my-library-account-assistance/ More information here]. Forgotten your Library PIN? [http://ilsauth.library.ubc.ca/login/forgot.php Reset it here].

:4. If your access problems are intermittent, i.e., you can access some online journals from home but not others it may be that there's an issue with the journal itself. You can report access problems relating to specific journals and/or databases here: [http://about.library.ubc.ca/contact-us/ejournal-help/ http://about.library.ubc.ca/contact-us/ejournal-help/]

There are innumerable ways to study language, and a good many of those ways are being pursued at UBC: from investigating children’s development of language, to examining dyslexia and recovery from stroke, to studying how meaning is made in endangered languages, to exploring differences in language use between literary and non-literary texts, to modelling the human vocal tract. Share your way of studying language with graduate researchers from other disciplines.

==What is cIRcle?==

[http://circle.ubc.ca/ cIRcle] is an open access digital repository for published and unpublished material created by the UBC community and its partners. Its aim is to showcase and preserve UBC’s unique intellectual output by making content freely available to anyone, anywhere via the web.

UBC is committed to [http://strategicplan.ubc.ca/the-plan/research-excellence/ “developing a system for making UBC research accessible in digital repositories, especially open access repositories”] and cIRcle is part of this strategy. The Senates of UBC Vancouver and UBC Okanagan have both endorsed UBC’s [http://scholcomm.ubc.ca/open-access/ubc-open-access-position-statement/ Open Access Position Statement] which encourages faculty to deposit their research in cIRcle. In addition, some [http://scholcomm.ubc.ca/funder-policies/ funding agencies] have open access policies.

If you wish to make your research openly accessible, cIRcle is an option to consider. You can always find us at our easy-to-remember URL: circle.ubc.ca

===What can I find in cIRcle?===
Through cIRcle you can find articles, conference and workshop papers, theses and dissertations, technical reports and working papers, books, datasets, learning objects, multimedia and audio-visual materials including podcasts, webcasts and more. cIRcle features both peer-reviewed and non peer-reviewed content making it a valuable resource for interdisciplinary research and inquiry.

===How is cIRcle organized?===
cIRcle content is organized around [circle.ubc.ca/community-list communities and collections]. Communities are UBC departments, labs, research centres, schools or other administrative units. Each community oversees one or more of its own collections, which contain submitted items. Collections and communities, therefore, have their own distinct identity and content.

===How is cIRcle connected to UBC Library?===
cIRcle is a service of the [http://www.library.ubc.ca/welcome.html UBC Library] and is a key player supporting the 'Accelerate Research' strategic direction in the [http://strategicplan.library.ubc.ca/files/2010/07/StrategicPlan-2010_FINAL.pdf Library's Strategic Plan] which in turn is based on UBC's core commitment to 'Research Excellence' as described in [http://strategicplan.ubc.ca/the-plan/research-excellence/ Place and Promise: the UBC Plan].

===What software does cIRcle use?===
cIRcle uses software called [http://www.dspace.org DSpace], an open-source system developed by MIT and Hewlett-Packard. Hundreds of institutions in countries around the world use DSpace. To learn more about cIRcle’s use of DSpace, see our [/submissions/user-guides/ user guides].

===How can I add my work to cIRcle?===
Visit our [http://circle.ubc.ca/submissions/submit-content/ instructions to submit your content] to learn more or contact [mailto:ubc-circle@lists.ubc.ca cIRcle staff].

===Background===
The system of [http://scholcomm.ubc.ca/ scholarship and scholarly publishing] is going through a process of change across the world. Notions of authorship and scholarly publishing are rapidly evolving in the digital age. Digital repositories (also known as information or institutional repositories) provide an opportunity to make scholarly content (including peer reviewed content) freely available online. Providing open access to an institution’s research output can make the dissemination of scholarly information more cost effective and easier, resulting in greater accountability for public tax dollars.

===Timeline===

In April 2006, the UBC Library’s e-Library Committee proposed the creation of a digital repository to showcase UBC’s scholarly work online. A pilot project was launched in spring 2007 and two years later, cIRcle became a full service of the Library. Today, with over 40,000 items online (and growing) scholarly communication is beginning to come full circle at UBC.

===Mission===

cIRcle’s main goals are:
*To showcase the intellectual output of UBC and its partners by making the research carried out at UBC freely accessible;
*To support teaching, learning, and research activities on campus; and
*To preserve materials in cIRcle for future generations.

===Impact and Assessment===

The first [http://wiki.ubc.ca/images/9/94/CIRcle_Annual_Activity_Report_2013.pdf cIRcle Annual Impact & Activity Report 2013] describes the engagement of UBC researchers, students, and community partners with cIRcle in 2013, and illustrates the dissemination of their scholarly work.

===International Ranking===

cIRcle is currently ranked the [http://repositories.webometrics.info/en/North_america/Canada number 1 repository in Canada], and consistently ranks in the top 5 of Canadian repositories in "The Ranking Web of World Repositories" operated by the [http://repositories.webometrics.info/en/About_Us Cybermetrics Lab]. In North America, cIRcle ranks [http://repositories.webometrics.info/en/North_america number 14].

Internationally, cIRcle ranks [http://repositories.webometrics.info/en/top_Inst number 33] out of 2188 institutional repositories and [http://repositories.webometrics.info/en/world number 43] out of 2275 world repositories, as of August 2015.
