* When attaching files, use the "Section 2" area to attach a file, rather than embedding the file in the "Section 1" Visual Editor to make your course mobile-friendly.
* The Force Completion option does not allow students to re-enter the test if they lose internet connection and are disconnected. If you use this options- ensure students can reach you if this situation arises to allow them re-entry to the test through number of attempts.
* Create a practice test to give students a chance to check their computer and browser configuration/internet connection, before they take a test in Connect.
* Avoid long tests- try breaking down tests into a series of smaller tests- ideally tests should take 10-20 minutes to complete- you can then use adaptive release to allow students to take the next short test in a series of tests, sequentially
* Realize that unless online tests are administered in a proctored environment, you should consider online tests to be take-home open-book examinations

=== Course Management ===
* Archive course at least twice a semester or after significant changes
* Include activity instructions on the same page where the activity occurs so students do not have to return to the instructions page when they enter the activity. For example, if you include a course link to a gradable discussion thread in a content area or learning module, include the instructions for the discussion within the discussion thread.
* Courses with multiple modules include course checklists and time estimates in pdf form for students to complete as they go through the lessons
* Provide course objectives and module objectives- so students know what to expect
* Use PDFs- not Microsoft word for standardization and assuring your content is not modifiable
'''Description:'''

This hands-on workshop is designed for faculty who want to learn and explore 7 research-based principles and strategies (based on Susan Ambrose's How Learning Works) for effective teaching and learning within the context of UBC's Connect.

You will be able to:

* explore how to use the 7 principles of learning to promote more effective learner-centred environments
* identify application of evidence-based teaching practices in Connect
* reflect about how learning works and encourage a curiosity about learning

All participants are expected to have completed a 'Getting Started in Connect' workshop, which is available on May 23: http://events.ctlt.ubc.ca/events/view/2379

=Part 1=

==Introductions (5mins.)==

==Research Results (20mins.)==

*Facilitated by Roselynn
*Student focus results*

===Guiding Questions===

*Was there anything that surprised you?
*What do you know about your students' experience with Connect?

==What Guides You in Your Teaching? (10mins)==
Possible title: Taking the students' perspective (focus on student learning)

Pair discussions. Think about your experience as a student or focus on one or twio students in your class.

*What strategies, approaches, principles do you use? (delete?)
*What helps you decide in the design of the course? (delete?)
*What makes a student successful? (think about this)
*Where do students get stuck in your course? Why do you think that is?
*Do you remember what it was like to be an undergraduate? (delete)
*When do you decide to change a course activity? (delete)
*How do you get feedback from your students? (delete)

===Debrief===

*What came out of your discussions?
*Write down on flipchart paper.

possible bridge into principles: so think about these issues that you have raised as we ereview principles together and see if any of the principles apply to your examples.

==Intro to the 7 Principles - Gallery Walk (15 mins.)==
* We had previously send out the Principles to you by email.....
* Quick summary at each principles -
* 7 flipchart-sized sheets will be revealed around the room. Each one will have a one principle and its corresponding diagram.

Lucas: 1, 5
Emily: 4, 7
Zack: 2, 3, 6

===Guiding Questions===
As we do the gallery walk, consider the following.

*Reflect on the principles in the context of your previous discussion.
*Do any of the principles relate to some of the challenges that might be facing your learners?

==Case Studies (30mins.)==

===Activity Instructions===

#Pair people.
#Each group will be given 2 case studies.
#Groups will be which principle(s) the case study relates to the most and give a rationale for your decision. [EDIT]
#List strategies that will help them implement the principle in their own practice as well as challenges.

Case Studies (from Ambrose, et al’s How Learning Works):

* Hamster Wheel – Principle: Self direction

* Why is This So Hard for Them to Understand? Principle: Prior knowledge

* My Students Are Going to Love This -NOT Principle: Motivation

* That Didn’t Work Out the Way I Anticipated Principle: Organizing Knowledge

* A Sum of Their Parts Principle: Mastery

* When Practice Does Not Make Perfect Principle: Goal Directed Practice

* No Good Deed Goes Unpunished Principle: Level of Development & Class Climate

Case studies will be tweaked to reflect fully online, blended and face to face classes.

===Guiding Questions===

Top of the Case Study => Aligned Principle

Quote

Image/Diagram

Case Studies

2 Example Strategy

Questions:
*What is going on? Do you have a similar experience?
*What strategies might you use to deal with the situation?
*Does this align with any other principles? (Ambrose quote about connections)

===Write Strategies on Stickes/Flipchart Paper===

===Gallery Walk===

Have the case studies beside each principle

Questions to think about:
*Does anything resonate with you?
*Will you do something different?
*Do you want to add new strategies?

===Debrief===

*Elicit group responses

=Break (5mins.)=

=Part 2=

==Bridging to Connect==

Principles are powerful because:
*Domain-independent
*Experience-independent
*Cross-culturally independent

Arguing that it is also "environment-independent"
*online, f2f, blended case studies
*flexible learning
*Connect is a tool that could support you in your teaching

Goals for 2nd part:
*Explore 7 principles in the context of Connect
*Support your teaching and learning

==Scavenger Hunt==

*Course will be provisioned in Connect
*Course content and exercises will be on the 7 Principles
'''USE SIMON'S icons o the Scavenger Hunt Sheet'''
#Hint 1: Prior Knowledge => Low stakes assessments
#Hint 2: What influences your teaching? => Concept Map
#Hint 3: Student Motivation => Need a tool
#Hint 4: Mastery => discussions/mashups
#Hint 5: Goal directed practice/targeted feedback => time-test/rubric
#Hint 6: Code of Conduct => Blogs/wikis
#Hint 7: Self-directed => Journals

#Assign a principle from the cards
#Go to gallery (check out principles + strategies)
#Can you think of other strategies? Which tools in '''''Connect''''' will you use? Will the strategy be different in a blended/face to face environment? How will this support flexible learning?
#Explore the tools '''''Connect''''' that support the strategy.
#Debrief
# '''Need slide that illustrates the Principle - Strategy - tool in Connect?'''

==Structure of Wiki Documents==
# '''Intro''': Introduce the topic/feature/goal of the How To document. For example, with creating blogs, include a paragraph on why an instructor would use or want a blog in the course at all. What blogs achieve, what blogs make possible.
# '''List''' "This document will show you how to:" and then a bulleted list of clear, concise objectives. Break down the steps into sections. For example, with Blogs- You will need to Access Blogs (which could even involve a simple course-menu button- or Course Tools > Blogs) before you can Create a blog, and then you'll need to Set the blog options. So the document could read:
#:This document will show you how to:
#:* Access blogs
#:* Create a blog
#:* Set blog options
# '''Break Down''': Break down the list using headers. I have been using size 2 headers (meaning two equal signs on either side of the title)
# '''Steps''': Insert numbered steps of workflow. Include a screenshot in any confusing or complicated area. For Accessibility, describe where buttons are located if they aren't immediately apparent in the page.
# '''Related Resources''': If there are other pages that fit in the same topic that could be requested, add this in by linking to those wiki pages.
# '''Add Categories''': To help organize the wiki, add the category of the page you are creating.

==Structure of Screencasts==
# '''Script''': I tend to use the wiki page as my script, I will print it out and read it conversationally as I record the steps using Camtasia.
# '''Recording''': Recording can be anywhere quiet, a room in the library, at home. wherever there is not a lot of background noise. Follow the steps and try to verbalize every click you make
# '''Editing''': To begin, I set a zoom/keyframe so that the screen is close and tight to what is most important to show, doing this in the beginning allows you to cut out quiet bits and having the keyframe automatically be applied to the next shot. I increase the volume to 300%- since it seems to be really quiet after uploading. I add "call-outs" like arrows or boxes for visual aids and I add shaded callout boxes to ensure none of my personal information is visible.
# '''Intro and Music''': I like to add music for the video intro callout and then create an audio point and fade it out as the screencast begins.
# '''Uploading''': After Editing, Publish the video as an HD video and then login to Kaltura and upload it
# '''Embedding''' Then Categorize the video in Kaltura to either Connect:Instructor videos or Connect:Student videos, click the embed- select the Widescreen Hover Control 560X315 (blog content width) and check the Support Mobile devices by fall-forward to HTML5 box before you copy the link and paste it into the wiki. Now you only need a part of the code to embed in the frame. Look at the following code in Wiki edit mode: {{#widget:Kaltura|dataurl=http://www.kaltura.com/index.php/kwidget/cache_st/1346178282/wid/_133342/uiconf_id/4989282/entry_id/1_eituhuac |width=560}}
You will search the huge block of code for the following link, which will follow this format- (I'm adding spaces in the http://www. so you can see it without it being a link) h t t p : / /www.kaltura.com/index.php/kwidget/cache_st/1346178282/wid/_133342/uiconf_id/4989282/entry_id/1_eituhuac

==MISC==
# At least once a week, give Zack a compliment.
# Three times a week, send Zack a video of cute animals doing cute things.
# Once every two months, provide Zack with Cheetos Puffs- crunchy is unacceptable.

# '''Uploading''': After Editing, Publish the video as an HD video and then login to Kaltura and upload it
# '''Embedding''' Then Categorize the video in Kaltura to either Connect:Instructor videos or Connect:Student videos, click the embed- select the Widescreen Hover Control 560X315 (blog content width) and check the Support Mobile devices by fall-forward to HTML5 box before you copy the link and paste it into the wiki. Now you only need a part of the code to embed in the frame.
# '''Uploading''': After Editing, Publish the video as an HD video and then login to Kaltura and upload it
# '''List''' "This document will show you how to:" and then a bulleted list of clear, concise objectives. Break down the steps into sections.
Pools are collections and groups of questions that can be included in tests and surveys. The advantage of using a pool is you do not have to remember all those questions and manually add them to each test or survey.

The Pool Canvas page for a question pool presents an inventory of all the questions that can be managed and searched. You can edit the pool names and instructions, create or edit questions, and upload questions. You can also use the check boxes to select individual questions or all questions and then delete them or change the point values.
When pool questions are selected for a test, links are created between the test and the pool questions. Changes to linked questions produce a warning message that the changes take effect everywhere the question appears. About the Pool Warning Page
