'''Selection Report Introduction:'''

My Selection Report linked below is based on my exploration of the Kitsilano community and in particular, in my attempt to improve the parts of the collection that are lacking. I have tried to include as much as possible, works that will support the area of the collection that I have chosen (French 900s) but there are some books that I have found through browsing bibliographic references that do not relate to Social Studies at all, but that are new items within the past couple of years. All selected items will be welcome additions to the school community.

'''BCERAC'''

I have done video resource evaluations, annotations and editing for ERAC in the past, but had not used the catalogue before. I appreciate the consistent format for reviews and I feel that the information is trustworthy based on my knowledge of the effort that it takes to review one item.

<big>The main entry for Milkweed by Spinelli - citation of extract in Selection report. </big>
</br>
[[File:BCERAC - Spinelli Milkweed.png]]
</br>

'''Shopping Carts'''
I found that the easiest way to purchase items was through a publisher/bookseller that offers online access to ordering. I found that one has to be careful of a company listing older editions - For reference items, I think that it is always good to buy the newest edition possible (unless the older one is super cheap!)

One more thing to note - many of the items in the ULS cart are "special orders". It can get confusing when checking which items have been received. I would probably make one order for items that are in stock, and then check around for other options on the "likely to be back-ordered" items.
</br>

</big>
</br>

'''Shopping Carts'''
I found that the easiest way to purchase items was through a publisher/bookseller that offers online access to ordering. I found that one has to be careful of a company listing older editions - For reference items, I think that it is always good to buy the newest edition possible (unless the older one is super cheap!)

==Reflections on Weeding==

From the collection report that I had prepared for the collection analysis assignment, I realized that the 900s part of the collection alone contained almost 1800 items – much too large for the purpose of this assignment. Even when I reduced that to books aged 30 years or older, the number was still over 400 titles. In the end, I chose to reduce that number further by selecting only books in the 900s that are most likely to support the Grade 11 History curriculum – That means 900-909 (world history), 940-949 (history of Europe), and 970-979 (history of North America). This report includes only about 180 items – still significant, but much more focussed.

'''Dificulties'''<br>
I found that so far, this has been the most difficult of all the assignments, mainly because I am not currently working in a library. Last term, as part-time librarian (two blocks) at my previous school, I was able to regularly spend time evaluating and weeding the collection, and I would simply work through a section of books, boxing up obvious discards, and setting aside books about which I was uncertain (so that my colleague and I could discuss the fate of that item. Therefore, there are a number of problems that cropped up through this process mostly because I am an outsider.

* In order to effect a proper weeding, I needed to gain access to the collection. As I am on an educational leave, and am not currently working as a Teacher-Librarian, I could only “drop by” and take a look – actually disposing of items would be impossible, or at least politically difficult.
* Another key challenge for me was that I have difficulty connecting with the culture of the library, the school or the community. As an outsider, I could make a decision to weed an item based on Bishop's criteria, but there may be “local criteria” that come into play. * A related consideration is that there is currently a project where VHS tapes are being converted to DVD format. That may be a way to prolong the life of a video, but... A VHS tape likely contains dated material, and some should perhaps be replaced with something more up-to-date. Even if the material perfectly matches curricular goals and the content is valid, for technical reasons, it may be difficult to transfer to DVD. (perhaps better to leave it, and consider replacement in the future... or perhaps find a digital resource that satisfies the same curricular need)
* On speaking to the librarian who was at the school until June 2010, I found out that the section on which I chose to focus was the one that she had not yet had a chance to work on. In other words, it had not been touched for many years. That was clear to me both from my observations, and from the calculation of average age of books in that section (almost 23 years). However, it was reassuring to hear the same message from the person who had been in charge during the last school year.

'''The process'''<br>
'''First steps''' - To help make this task more manageable, I began with the steps that require little thought. By separating out the twenty oldest books in this section, all of them published before 1971. This was the easiest way to separate the collection, as I simply had to sort my Excel list by date and by call number. I anticipated that all of these would be discarded or at best, kept in an archival area for historical purposes - some were in near pristine condition.

The next step was to look at other titles published between 1972-1981 on the list of which we have multiple copies. Most of these sets should be completely removed from the collection; at most, only one copy would be kept.

These two steps fall well within the "10-15 years old" guideline on page 122 of the Bishop text for the 900s. They also allow me to delete almost half of the items from this group.

'''Conclusion'''<br>
In September, I will remove all of the books on this weeding list, keeping *a few* titles in an archive area for "old, yet interesting" books and discard the rest. In Vancouver schools, that means:
* delete the items from the system
** scan each one and delete one at a time
** scan a whole box of books into an IGE (item group editor) and ask that the district cataloguer delete them.
* Box them and send them to the board office with the appropriate label.
<br>
'''Changes'''
* When I actually do a weeding in this library, I think that it makes sense to do the whole non-fiction collection and pull ALL of the books over 35-40 years. I think that most of these items will be discards, and that by reducing the number of books on shelves, weeding by section will become much easier.
* Another step that I would take in weeding would be to move the videos to a distinct section of the library.
** this could be a way to promote these items to staff as some are still valuable classroom resources
** it will also free up more shelf space for reorganizing the remaining books.
