It would be nice if solutions that involve pointers to people or online resources could be included in the wiki.
'''re: opening online resources for late students:'''
One idea might be a policy of re-opening quizzes for study purposes prior to exams. The Vista system will record first attempts for grades, so there's no reason these folks shouldn't simply wait for that reopening - hence no work for course administration. Other than managing re-opening of quizzes, plus ensuring grades are collected properly - but that had to be done anyway.

'''re: All the little fixes needed when students find an error with assessments'''
These are "easy" when you know your way around Vista; "impossible" when you don't. This is another reason to have a technician - i.e. staff person - who's job is to manage all these issues. It's just too much to expect instructors to be able to do all this stuff. EOSC372 is another example of a course with these challenges, and Erin is doing "administration" of this.

'''Discussion boards'''
How to make discussion boards a useful first point of contact for students, or even use it for other purposes? I do it for now, but it doesn't really cost much - less than email.

=== eosc210 ===

The administrator for 21 has to be able to deal with a lot of stuff; PeerWise, Vista and Clickers. How to help them is a problem. Much of the work is face to face discussions.

Hi Brett,
I am the new administrator for EOSC 210. Erik mentioned that he talked to you about me.
Brett, I was wondering if I could meet with you sometime next week to go over peerwise and also about adding a new lab to the schedule. I look forward to your response,
Best regards,
Shama

Hi Shama,
To get you started, here's the PeerWise site:
http://peerwise.cs.auckland.ac.nz/at/?ubc_ca
Using PeerWise is slightly complicated by the fact that we can't use identifiable student info on foriegn servers. So after we set up the course we have to create unique random identifiers.
The course isn't set up yet, but you can register from that page.
How many students are in EOSC 210?
B

Hi Brett,
Thanks so much for your email. I tried registering for the Peerwise website but it mentioned that I need a course ID and Identifier. Do you know how I can get those? Thanks,
Regards,
Shama

Ah. Either you need to go register as an instructor on the main page (that is the student registration) or possibly I can set you up as an instructor. Check the main page first.
B

Face to Face meeting with Shama to set up PeerWise and to enter identifiers into Vista

Here's that document Shama,
Let me know when I've forgotten something else.
B
Using PeerWise in EOSC 210 - 2011.pdf (Brett has this file, it needs to be updated each year)

Hi Brett,
I was wondering if the TAs are given any formal instruction (orientation?) on running a classroom at UBC. Or, if there is a document/weblink they can refer to if they need help.
Cheers,
Shama

Yeah,
Complicated story. Short answer, no. Long answer, kind of. If they look for it.
I'm afraid any support you can give them would be good. You might tell them to go to one of the more experienced students labs. This is extra tricky because the 210 labs are designed to be demoed.
B

Hi Brett,
For the geological techniques lab (#4) the students will need compasses and GPS units, where can the TAs get those? Thanks,
Shama

Hi Shama,
I ran into your head TA on Friday and she asked the same thing. :)
Downstairs in the equipment room. They sign them out from Pablo. They should know what to do.
B

Hi Brett,
A lot of students are having problems accessing peerwise. After typing in the course ID (5711) they are getting an "invalid identifier" message. Should I contact Paul? Thanks,
Shama

Hi Shama,
I just tried it and it worked.
Make sure they are logging in from UBC's page:
http://peerwise.cs.auckland.ac.nz/at/?ubc_ca
and if that doesn't work email Paul (he's a really nice guy).
B

<One of the documents had the wrong course identifier. Some students did not have the correct Course ID>

Hi Brett,
I received the following email from a student. He was on the waiting list until recently. Now, he is registered the class but can't register his i-clicker. Any suggestions as to why that would happen?
Also, Brett, I can't seem to find in my notes how to assign the students the extra IDs (you created for me) for peerwise. I went to the "manage student identifiers" page but didn't proceed because I'm not sure if adding one of the extra IDs (47632870215) at the end of the list would mess up the whole thing. My user name is shama and password is haque24. Brett, can you please help me?
Looking forward to your response,
Cheers,
Shama

Hi Shama,
I hope things are calming down now. :)
Re: iclicker - no idea. Try contacting CTLT and asking them.
Re: Peerwise - The extra identifiers I added should already be part of the PeerWise course. That way you only have to add them to the Vista course under the new student's name.
Does that make sense?
B

Hi Brett,
Thanks so much for your quick response, really appreciate it!
Brett, I'm still a bit confused because I'm trying to add the student onto the Vista course. How do I add a new student name into the existing eosc210 vista file? Or, is the student name supposed to be there automatically?
Regards,
Shama

Yeah, the system is supposed to add them to vista. I don't know if there is a delay on that or if that means the student hasn't registered yet.
B

Hi Brett,
Do you know how I can find out for which UBC courses EOSC 210 is a prerequisite for?
Best regards,
Shama

Hmmm... I don't know. It's a required course for all geological, mining, and civil engineers. the courses it's a prereq for are probably a handful Applied Science and a few of our own Geological Engineering courses.
Maybe ask Erik?
B

<or check the course listing. FYI 210 has no prereqs except departmental restrictions>

Hi Brett,
I received the following email. The ID the student mentions is one of the unclaimed one, I am a little confused as to why it would show up in his vista site.
Cheers,
Shama
Hey, I missed the creating a question before the midterm the other day because i was having trouble with registering on peerwise. At the time it did not recognise the id number that i was putting in. I've been trying since then to register, but for some reason it wont recognize my id 3153141477 which i got from the grades part of the vista site.
Thanks,
XXXXX

Hi Shama,
You should make sure they are signing in the correct way (some of them get confused), and if it still doesn't work either go check assign one of the different IDs.
Cheers,
Brett

<It turned out some students were assigned duplicate IDs. Shama had used "unclaimed" IDs from the PeerWise site to assign to new students. These were mostly unassigned, but some were assigned to students who had not yet registered for the system.>

Hi again Brett,
I remember you mentioned earlier that to assign IDs I just need to drop the unclaimed IDs from peerwise into vista. I looked at Vista and I am not sure where and how I need to assign someone an ID for peerwise. :(
Please help!!!
Shama

If you go into Vista, Make sure the "Teach" tab on the upper left is selected, and choose grade book from the toolbar on the left.
Once you are in there if you don't see "Peerwise ID" choose "show all columns" (or something like that). Then find and select the student, and click on the value for their ID (which will probably be "--"). It should let you add your # there.
B

Hi Brett,
I was wondering if I could meet with you on Thursday (6th) between 9:30 am - 11:00 am. Shouldn't take more than 15 minutes or so.
Cheers,
