For the most up to date crowd-sourced information see: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mobile_technology

Current and Future Developments

Increasing access to mobile technology will/could/might change how we teach and learn. For example, online step-by-step protocols can be immediately accessed by students completing assignments or working with clients, or students can upload confidential information (e.g., psychotherapy session videos) to secure servers and access that information offsite. Technologies evolve to meet the needs of the users, so current users have a role in shaping what comes next.

However, greater access also comes with potential problems. Issues include security of transmitted data, privacy (i.e., individuals in the immediate environment may be privy to information that you or they would not wish them to be), technical support, and cost of hardware. Moreover, existing instructors were trained in a different pedagogical environment, making it difficult to imagine creative ways to integrate new technologies into their teaching. An ongoing issue is student disengagement. Mobile technologies also mean that students in classes are able to participate in non-course related activities such as email or blogging.

You are a psychologist supervising a psychology graduate student. The student has been very open in supervision and has shared with you that she is going through a rough time in her personal life. Lately you’ve become concerned that her personal crisis is becoming worse and may be impairing her clinical work. She has been late for a few sessions, poorly prepared for supervision, and snapped at one of her clients in the previous session. You’ve discussed the issue with her, but she disagrees that it’s a problem and assures you that she can handle it. You raise the possibility of involving her training program to ensure that she has the support that she needs and she responds with anger, saying that she thought that the personal struggles she told you about were confidential. What would you do?

'''STEP 1: Who are the people potentially affected by decision?'''
As a psychologist in private practice you have a 10 year-old client that you believe has been emotionally abused. The child’s mother has been an active participant in the therapy process. The child’s parents are in the midst of a divorce and the mother has often spoken negatively about the child’s father when the child was present. In a private session with the child, he begged you to make sure that he “gets to live with Mommy”. You have expertise in the area of parental capacity evaluations in custody cases. In one of your sessions, she sits quite close to you and tells you that she daydreams about you holding her as she cries in session. She says that she feels embarrassed telling you this, but you’ve become her lifeline and she knows that you, of all people, will understand how great her need is for human contact.
You are a psychologist in private practice working with a new client with severe depression and a history of abuse and neglect. You have assessed her suicide risk as moderate to high and have spent the last few sessions attempting to ameliorate that risk. In one of your sessions, she sits quite close to you and tells you that she daydreams about you holding her as she cries in session. She says that she feels embarrassed telling you this, but you’ve become her lifeline and she knows that you, of all people, will understand how great her need is for human contact. At that point she starts to tear up and cry quietly. What do you do?

'''STEP 1: Who are the people potentially affected by decision?'''
You are conducting therapy with Aboriginal clients in a remote community via telehealth (i.e., secure videoconferencing). One of your toughest clients has severe PTSD and you have been using a well-known empirically supported cognitive behavioral treatment with him. However, your client has consistently failed to complete the record forms that you have provided for homework and prefers instead to follow the advice of his tribal elder, which often involves ceremonial rituals and medicinal herbs. Your client is making poor progress and you are concerned about his well-being.
You are the only psychologist living in a small rural community. Your primary area of practice is treatment of children with externalizing disorders. In working with one of your clients, you get to know the child’s father and discover that he suffers from an alcohol addiction. The father says he is aware that his addiction is harming his family and asks if you would be willing to work with him to help him “kick the habit”. You have worked for many years with a client with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS, or Lou Gehrig's disease). ALS is a progressive, fatal, neurodegenerative disease caused by the degeneration of motor neurons, the nerve cells in the central nervous system that control voluntary muscle movement. Although the motor degeneration is usually pervasive, cognitive function is spared. Your client is in the final stages of the disease and has contacted Dr. Jack Kevorkian to arrange for an assisted suicide. Your client shared his plans with you at your most recent session. The client’s family is highly distressed at the prospect of the client committing suicide, think the client is depressed, and have insisted that you intervene to prevent the suicide.
The team members are housed in different units, some at different hospitals, and meeting as a group to conduct rounds has proven impossible. One of the physicians begins sending detailed emails regarding some of the more difficult patients to the team to coordinate care.
'''Welcome to the Psychology 537: Ethics and Professional Issues Wiki'''

One of the major goals of this course is to identify and prioritize relevant ethical principles and laws to resolve ethical dilemmas using an 11-step method. Each week, a new ethical vignette will be posted and you will be asked to contribute an entry for one of the eleven steps. Over the course of the term, you must contribute at least one entry for each of the steps (excluding steps 8-10). Please identify your entry using your initials, as your participation in this assignment will be graded. More than one person may contribute to each step, as each may have different ideas or views. However, by the end of the week, each step should have at least 1 comment. '''The class responses will be printed and available as a resource for you to use in the final exam.''' At the bottom of this page are links to the individual vignettes.

Before you get started, a few pointers and ground rules:

1) If you have questions about how to make a posting, please go to Help:Editing [http://wiki.ubc.ca/Help:Editing] or view the "Wikis in Plain English" video [http://www.commoncraft.com/video-wikis-plain-english]. You will need to login with your CWL to be able to make changes to the wiki. Don't forget to save the page when you finish.

2) Although a wiki is sometimes used to create a collective document in which earlier entries are changed and updated by subsequent users, I'll ask that you not alter anyone else's comments. Please add your own comments, leaving the original entries intact so that we can see a group of threaded messages evolve in which you can build on and respond to one another's comments. In this way, the wiki will serve as a structured group discussion.

3) Please keep keep entries respectful and confine your comments to the vignette under discussion.

The class responses will be printed and available as a resource for you to use in the final exam. At the bottom of this page are links to the individual vignettes.

'''Welcome to Psychology 537: Ethics and Professional Issues'''

One of the major goals of this course is to identify and prioritize relevant ethical principles and laws to resolve ethical dilemmas using an 11-step method. Each week, a new ethical vignette will be posted and you will be asked to contribute an entry for one of the eleven steps. Over the course of the term, you must contribute at least one entry for each of the steps (excluding steps 8-10). Please identify your entry using your initials, as your participation in this assignment will be graded. More than one person may contribute to each step, as each may have different ideas or views. The class responses will be printed and available as a resource for you to use in the final exam. At the bottom of this page are links to the individual vignettes.

3) Please keep keep entries respectful and confine you comments to the vignette under discussion.
