Dr Christopher Nguan MD
Dr. Nguan is a Kidney Transplant Urologist, operating at Vancouver General Hospital since 2006 where he is the Surgical Director of Renal Transplantation. He serves on the Federally appointed Canadian Blood Services panel of the Kidney Transplant Advisory Committee and is Chair of the National Kidney Surgical Services Subcommittee impacting organ transplant services across Canada. Dr. Nguan is a Surgeon Scientist, appointed as Associate Professor at the University of British Columbia through the Department of Urologic Sciences (DUS). His main areas of research are twofold: research in Applied Sciences revolving around advanced technologies for medicine and surgery including computer vision, AR/VR, diagnostic imaging, and machine learning/AI, and a second research arm in basic and translational science related to cell/tissue/organ preservation, diagnostics, organ modification and transplant outcomes. He has authored over 100 peer reviewed publications and is named on 6 novel patents. He previously held the Chief Medical Officer (CMO) position with UBC spinoff company SonicIncytes which is now a successful commercial company, as likewise has served as the CMO of UBC startup AVIVO biotechnology which has developed novel IP able to convert all blood and organ ABO types to Universal type O which has significant implications for transfusion medicine and organ transplantation worldwide. As Co-Founder of the Collective Open Source Medical Innovations for COVID-19 (COSMIC) during the pandemic, Dr. Nguan served and President and Director for this crowdsourced nonprofit which has open sourced critical respiratory support devices globally. Dr. Nguan has served in a regulatory capacity with the BC College of Physicians and Surgeons as an elected member of the Board of Directors, and continues to serve as the longtime Program Director of the UBC Urology Postgraduate Training Program with active research in assessment methods and curriculum development. His particular interest in DEI principles has led to some of the most widely cited such literature in medical education, and continues to advocate strongly for the elimination of systemic racism in Medicine. Dr. Nguan is a Planetary Health advocate and is conducting seminal studies in the impact of highly environmental impactful therapies such as dialysis and the benefits of kidney transplantation in this setting.

Christopher Nguan MD DFRCSC SOT (UBC) is a full time Canadian transplant surgeon-scientist with a research interest in the intersection of healthcare resources and sustainability. He has examined the impacts of Hospital Operating Theaters and specifically kidney transplantation procedures compared to other forms of kidney replacement therapy. In his role as the Surgical Director for Kidney Transplantation at VGH and Chair of the Canadian Kidney Surgical Subcommittee for Canadian Blood Services, he is interested in ongoing efforts at integrating sustainability efforts with this domain.
