Habit and Difference for Garbage Classification

Biography

  • Zichao Wang

I am Zichao, a student of UBC. During the years I have lived in Vancouver, I have found many problems with garbage classification. Garbage classification is a topic that is closely related to everyone's life. Everyone produces garbage in different degrees every day. More scientific classification and sorting of garbage can be of great help to the ecological environment. Effective and scientific waste separation may make good use of sustainable resources. Since I began to pay attention to the waste and loss of sustainable resources caused by garbage classification around me. I found a lot of problems with garbage classification that I didn't pay attention to. In my opinion, better garbage classification can effectively help the sustainability of sustainable resources.

  • Jemmy Fan

I’m a vantage student from China, it’s my first time to live oversea, some seems to be hard to adapt, but I’m happy to join in new research that I have never seen before! With my teammates, I hope I can know more about such a new area ---sustainability in the 21st century.

  • Louise Liu

I am Louise Liu. My hometown in China. The place where I was born is not very prosperous like Beijing. However, I prefer to live in a city where I feel comfortable and relaxed rather than living in a busy life. So I chose Vancouver, the pearl of the landscape. I like to make some meals in my spare time. I enjoy trying new dishes and different flavors. I want to choose the topic of environmental sustainability because I made a move a few weeks ago. There is a lot of garbage that I need to sort and deal with, and I also need to spend some time on this kind of thing. I am very interested in this part, so I want to explore further.

  • Carol Tsa

My name is Carol Tsa, and I am 19 years old. I am from Hong Kong. The reason for me choosing this topic is people in my home town are not very concerned about recycling and waste sorting. However, since I came to Vancouver, I started building a habit of waste sorting, including food waste sorting. Therefore, I would like to study what factors affect our concern and habit of environmental protection. And how to make more people pay close attention to environmental sustainability.

Abstract

Our research question is: how have the recycling and waste disposal habits of VANT 149 students changed or stayed the same between their habits in their home city and their habits since coming to Vancouver? We conducted this research project to investigate the public's awareness of garbage recycling, so as to change the status quo, develop good garbage disposal habits. Arora mentions that one of the biggest problems facing human beings is the sustainable development of the environment. (Arora, 2018) as more and more people become aware of the need to recycle and reduce waste, garbage classification has become a social problem that people generally pay attention to. Due to the changing lifestyle of people, the waste produced every day is endless. This virtually brings great difficulties to garbage collection, garbage disposal, and utilization. We used quantitative analysis by collecting the data from 44 students in VANT 149 with Qualtrics survey. In this project, we are using the correlation method to analyze the survey data. In conclusion, 86% of the participants start garbage sorting in accordance with the requirements and regulations after 6 months, students generally increase the amount they recycle, but they do more in Vancouver. Moreover, it increases the frequency and detail of such operations after they return home. The waste separation method in Canada is quite useful and effective. This will help students who have lived in Vancouver for a long time to continue this habit around the world in the future, which is beneficial to the sustainable development of the world.
