Assignments

Assignments

Issue: Students can't edit peer reviews they've written after they have been saved.

A request to allow students to edit peer reviews after saving was previously submitted as an idea on the Canvas Studio page, but this idea has since been archived. Users can re-submit this idea for consideration through the Canvas Studio.

Issue: How can I disable student comments on Assignments?

Unfortunately, it's not possible to disable comments on assignments. However, instructors can reply to students’ comments on assignments from the Canvas inbox. Instructors can also set up their notifications preferences so that comments are forwarded to their UBC email account.

Note: Users can reply directly via email to messages forwarded to their email account by Canvas. It’s now possible to reply directly to Canvas message notifications from your email account. If you need to include an attachment in your reply, you will need to log into Canvas and reply through the Canvas Inbox. To learn how to set your notification preferences in Canvas see here for instructors or here for students.

Issue: Reassigning a group assignment to a different group is not possible.

It is possible to reassign a group assignment to a different group set, unless a student has already submitted homework to the assignment. If a student has already submitted something to an assignment, the work around would be to recreate the assignment and set it to the proper group set. For more information see here.

Communication

Communication

Issue: Emails from Canvas are not arriving even though the user’s email address is listed correctly in Canvas.

Occasionally an email address is added to Canvas’s suppression list by mistake. Please contact LT.hub@ubc.ca to escalate to Canvas support.

Issue: Students can't post anonymously in Discussions.

Currently, the only workaround for this issue is to use Piazza. “Anonymous Discussion Forums” has been submitted as an idea on the Canvas Studio page. Visit the Canvas Studio page to vote to have this feature added to Canvas.

Issue: The search capabilities for the Canvas Inbox are too limited.

Keyword Search for the Inbox had been previously submitted as an idea on the Canvas Studio page, but this idea has since been archived. Users can re-submit the idea for consideration through the Canvas Studio.

Issue: It's not possible to export summaries of Discussions.

“Exporting Discussions” has been submitted as an idea on the Canvas Studio page. Visit the Canvas Studio page to vote to have this feature added to Canvas.

Issue: Push notifications aren't working in the Canvas app.

Mobile push notifications are not currently configured for Canvas in Canada. Canvas's engineering team is working to enable mobile push notifications in Canada.

Display Name

Display Name

Issue: A name appears incorrectly in Canvas.

Canvas populates with students’ preferred names, as listed in the SISC. Instructors' and staff members' names are populated in Canvas from the Faculty & Administrative Directory.

Students should contact their Enrolment Services Professional to update their preferred names in the SISC. Instructors and staff should contact their Departmental Directory Administrator to update their names in the UBC Faculty & Administrative Directory.

Issue: Identifying a particular student in the FSC based on their account name in Canvas (preferred name) can be challenging.

A workaround is to export the Gradebook from Canvas, sort the spreadsheet by SIS User ID, and sort the class roster in the FSC by student number.

Enrolment and Access

Enrolment and Access

Issue: How can unregistered students to gain access to a course?

Instructors can submit requests to LT.hub@ubc.ca to add unregistered students to their courses. To prevent delays in processing these requests, we recommend that the instructor confirms that the student has logged into http://canvas.ubc.ca prior to submitting the request.

Once added to a course, unregistered students can access most course materials. However, they don't have access to Assignments and Quizzes, and they can't post to Discussions. It's an instructor’s responsibility to ensure that unregistered students do not have access to copyrighted material, such as the Library Online Course Reserves (LOCR).

Issue: How do students on the waitlist gain access?

Students cannot be granted course access while on the waitlist.

Issue: Self-enrolment is not enabled for SIS-linked courses.

Self-enrolment is not permitted for courses that are linked to the SIS.

Issue: Users may not access Canvas from Cuba, Iran, North Korea, Syria, and the region of Crimea.

Without prior authorization from the U.S. government, Canvas prohibits use in these locations. See here for more information.

Grading

Grading

Issue: When uploading grades into the Gradebook, an error message appears: “Invalid CSV file. Grades could not be updated.”

Please ensure your file format is .csv and remove any non-alphanumeric characters including accented characters and special characters in your list of student names. Non-alphanumeric characters may cause errors when uploading a .csv.

See here for information on uploading grades into Gradebook.

Issue: Instructors and TAs can't download all comments for a completed assignment.

Download Assignment Comments and Completed Rubrics has been submitted as an idea on the Canvas Studio page. Visit the Canvas Studio page to vote to have this feature added to Canvas.

Issue: Rubric criteria can't be sorted (dragged and dropped).

Users can submit this idea for consideration through the Canvas Studio.

Issue: Multiple graders erase one another's SpeedGrader rubric submissions.

A workaround is to have TAs upload their marks to a shared document. Then, one grader enters all marks. See here for more information.

Issue: Dragging columns to rearrange a large Gradebook can cause errors.

We are aware of the issue and it will be investigated.

Issue: Scores missing after changing rubrics.

In a Canvas assignment or quiz, if you change rubrics after scoring the previous rubric, scores will be removed from SpeedGrader. A workaround is to check the beta instance for the scores if they were entered in before the change.

Group Management

Group Management

Issue: Manually adding students to Groups with similar Group names can be challenging because lengthy Group names are truncated.

We are aware of the issue and it will be investigated.

Issue: There is no indication which Groups are empty when assigning students to Groups.

We are aware of the issue and it will be investigated.

Multimedia

Multimedia

Issue: An embedded image doesn't load. Users are only able to see the file name.

This problem has been reported to Canvas, and the efforts to resolve issue are ongoing. See here for more details. In the meantime, two workaround options are available:

  • Option 1: Clear your browser’s cache/cookies. (PC/ Mac)
  • Option 2: Access Canvas from a private window in Firefox.

Issue: Kaltura videos can't be viewed in Student View.

Kaltura Videos can be viewed by Test Student Accounts. Test students will be able to do everything that a real student can, including interacting with the media gallery.

Create a Test Student Account by setting up a Basic CWL Account.

  • Enter any student name and CWL. This will become the name of the Test Student Account.
  • Enter a separate email address that is unique from the one you use with your main account (and, any other accounts you subsequently want to make will also need a different email attached to each). Each CWL created has to be tied to a different email address.

Once you've set up your Basic account(s), submit a request to LT.hub@ubc.ca with the CWL(s) for the test student(s) to be added into the course.

Pages

Pages

Issue: Organizing many Pages is challenging.

“Folder Organization for Pages” has been submitted as an idea on the Canvas Studio page. Visit the Canvas Studio page to vote to have this feature added to Canvas.

Issue: Release times for Pages can't be scheduled.

A workaround is to use link to a page in a time-locked module instead. See here for how to lock a module until a certain date and time.

“Add ‘Lock until date’ to content pages” has been submitted as an idea on the Canvas Studio page. Visit the Canvas Studio page to vote to have this feature added to Canvas.

Issue: Word documents with hyperlinks converted into Canvas pages do not maintain hyperlinks.

We are aware of the issue and it will be investigated.

Quizzes

Quizzes

Issue: What is the status of New Quizzes?

New Quizzes is available in Canvas under Quizzes. Check out Canvas' New Quizzes FAQ and New Quizzes Chapter in the Instructor Guide for more information.

Issue: Quizzes can't be set to be released only to specific Groups.

Group Quizzes had been previously submitted as an idea on the Canvas Studio page, but this idea has since been archived. Users can re-submit the idea for consideration through the Canvas Studio.

Issue: Instructors can't ignore a quiz attempt. Moderating the quiz allows instructors to give a students an extra attempt, but this causes problems if the instructor has chosen to have Canvas calculate grades based on the average number of attempts.

Delete Quiz Attempts had been previously submitted as an idea on the Canvas Studio page, but this idea has since been archived. Users can re-submit the idea for consideration through the Canvas Studio.

Issue: When instructors manually regrade and update the first attempt of a quiz in Speedgrader, they're no longer able to view the second (or later) quiz attempts. Instructors need to refresh the page in order to be able to toggle between quiz attempts.

We are aware of the issue and it will be investigated.

Issue: If you have a “multiple answer” question and a “matching” question that is in the same quiz, there is a bug when displaying the quiz results after submission. It does not display all the correct answers in the results page and only displays all but one (last correct answer on the list of answer choices), if: (1) the student did not select this as an answer in their submission, or (2) the student did not get 100% on the matching question in the quiz.

This bug has been reported to Instructure and will be fixed in Quizzes.Next.
Example 1: In this submission, the student did not get 100% on the matching question (Question 1), there is no indication that Victoria Day is also a correct answer in the results page.
Example 2: In this submission, the student got 100% on the matching question (Question 1), the results page indicate that Victoria Day is also a correct answer, indicated by the gray arrow beside the last answer choice.
