Export and Archive Failed Email Message is received when creating an Export or Archive File where there are Errors

When creating an Export or Archive zip file, a Export or Archive Failed: [Course ID] could not be completed email is received if there are errors when generating the zip file (i.e. the course contains a link to a file that does not exist, can not package the Collaborate session or Early Warning Rules, and etc).

The Export and Archive zip files are created even though the message indicates that the process could not be completed. This issue has been reported to Blackboard Support Case #01738211 and we are working with them to resolve it.

You may need to do this a few times but it resolves the issue.

Changing Quiz Names in Grade Centre

Issue

Workaround

Resolution

Changing Quiz Names in Grade Centre

Changing a quiz name does not always change the name in the Grade Center.

If the assessment name is changed in the Tests, Surveys and Pools area of the Control Panel, the update will not automatically be applied to the Grade Center column.

If the assessment name is changed using "Edit Test Options" in the Content Area where the assessment is deployed, the Grade Center column will be updated.

However, if there is a name listed in the "Grade Center Name" field (found in by selecting Edit Column in the Grade Center) this name will override any changes.

This field may be imported from Vista along with the assessment. It is suggested that instructors clean up their Grade Book in their Vista courses before migrating to Connect.

Creating Groups - Viewing Groups in Grade Centre

Issue

Workaround

Resolution

Creating Groups - Viewing Groups in Grade Centre

Instructors cannot create or see groups through the Grade Center.

As with Vista, Groups are not created in the Grade Centre. Groups are created from the Control Panel -> Users and Groups -> Groups. However, the groups are not indicated in the Grade Centre.

IT is exploring a Groups Viewer Building Block that may provide this functionality. At this point the only way for instructors to see the membership of groups is to get this information from the Groups area and then add this information manually to the Grade Centre using a text column and manually add the group number.

Editing Migrated Rubrics

Issue

Workaround

Resolution

Editing Migrated Rubrics

Migrated rubrics cannot be edited. Users can open, view and make changes to the rubric, but when they click Save they receive the following error "A valid numeric value must be entered: Points"

A workaround, posted in Connect Central, notes that instructors edit the rubric in two ways:

  • By selecting "Range of points" as the rubric type instead of "points." Enter a point range (for example replace an item worth 0 points with the range 0 to 0) and then switch the type back to points. Instructors should now be able to make edits.
  • Instructors can export and import the rubric. If this option is chosen, instructors will need to reassign the rubric to assignments, discussions, etc

Grade Center download - Graded Items do not appear in Multiple attempts scenario

Issue

Workaround

Resolution

Grade Center download - Graded Items do not appear in Multiple attempts scenario

Tests/Assignments that are allowed more than 1 attempt and are initially graded. The grades do not appear when the file is downloaded if there is a second submission that needs grading.

Issue: the grade should appear in the downloaded file regardless if the second attempt has not been graded. Instead, the instructor sees "needs grading".
Steps to replicate:

  1. Add an assignment or test with more than 1 attempt.
  2. Submit at least 2 attempts. Grade 1 of the attempts.
  3. The grade center will show the grade but also the green exclamation icon that indicates "needs grading".
  4. Download the grade center. Any grade in the display of the Grade Center in Connect that was also accompanied by a "needs grading" icon will have "Needs grading" as the value for that cell in the downloaded file.

Select Edit Column information > change the options in the Score Attempts and download file (i.e. First Graded Attempt) However, you will need to change it back as it won't display the other attempts.

Grade Center download file only contains "in progress" or "needs grading" instead of student grade

Issue

Workaround

Resolution

Grade Center download file only contains "in progress" or "needs grading" instead of student grade

If you view the Connect Grade Center and there are tests for which students have submitted multiple attempts, and some of those attempts are still "in progress," Connect will display the grade for those attempts which the students have submitted and an "in progress" icon to indicate they also have attempts which have not been submitted. If you download the Grade Center in this situation, the resulting file will only contain "in progress" for those students that have submitted multiple attempts of the test and not their grade as listed in the Grade Center. The same situation will occur if students have submitted multiple attempts and some attempts have been fully graded but some still need grading (indicated by a green exclamation mark icon). In this case, the downloaded file will only list "needs grading" for the student(s) in question.

Create a Calculated "Total" column for each test column in the Grade Center for which students have multiple attempts, some of which are in progress or still need grading. Configure the "Total" column to total just the single quiz in question. When you download the Connect Grade Center, these "Total" columns will contain all students' numerical grades, even if some of their attempts are in progress or still need grading.

Grading Quiz Questions

Issue

Workaround

Resolution

Grading Quiz Questions

In some courses, instructors are unable to grade items in a quiz. They can open and view the quiz attempts, but when they enter an item score and then click Save they receive an error asking them to contact their system administrator.

The suggestion is to copy the question into a basic text editor like Notepad to remove the HTML and then copy/paste it back into the Quiz.

Alternately, to just retype the specific questions. Instructors could also use Respondus to clean up the html.

Logged with Bb Support (incident 921420). The response from them is that the error is caused by invalid / bad HTML in the Fill in the Blank Questions in Quiz 1.

Highest Grade Setting Impacts Attempt Statistics and Download Results

When "Highest Grade" is selected as the scoring option for assessments that allow multiple attempts, it impacts the results that are displayed in the Attempt Statistics and when the assessment results are downloaded. When highest grade is selected, only the second (or later) attempts are included in the results. Results from students who make only one attempt are not included.

As a workaround, you can chose a different scoring option (e.g. average of all attempts) to see the statistics or results from all attempts. Scoring options can be changed without loss of student data.

Reusable Objects in Migrated Courses from the Pilot LMS Are Not Visible to Students in Connect

Courses containing reusable objects that were migrated from the Pilot LMS (lms.ubc.ca) to Connect (connect.ubc.ca) will display random text like "@X@artifact_539564_1@X@" to students. Reusable objects will display correctly to Instructors / Course Builders / Instructional Support Staff. It will only be apparent if they switch to Student View to check the course content.

This is due to the changes in how permissions to content is handled in the current version of Blackboard Learn on Connect. Explicit read permissions for course students will need to be added to the reusable object to allow students to view it.

To add Read permissions to a reusable object:

  • Navigate to Course Management > Content Collection
  • Select the course folder
  • Find the reusable object within the course folder
  • Click the chevron beside the reusable object name and choose Permissions

Secure Content Warning (Internet Explorer)

Internet Explorer users may encounter a "Security Warning" pop-up message when viewing certain course content in Connect. The reason for this warning is that you're on an SSL-secured (https protocol) page that is attempting to load non-SSL (http protocol) content. The external content can be an RSS feed, embedded videos, or images hosted on non-SSL websites.

To view the content without disabling the Secure Content Warning:

  • Select No each time the pop-up message appears

To disable the Secure Content Warning:

  • In Internet Explorer, goto Tools
  • Click Internet Options
  • Click the Security tab
  • Click Custom Level
  • Under Miscellaneous, find "Display Mixed Content, select Enable, and click OK.
  • Restart Internet Explorer

What if you clicked Yes to the Secure Content Warning

  • If you selected Yes to the pop-up message, Internet Explorer will not display the linked website content. The browser will display a message similar to "The content is outside the learning environment".

UBC Wiki is SSL enabled

  • If the embedded code within the course content is updated so the links use "https", the secure content warning message should not appear.
  • Warnings will still appear if content has absolute links to non-secure http files on the wiki.

Self-enroll Group Sets

Self-enroll Group Sets

Hidden groups created by Group sets appear in the self-enroll sign up sheets
Steps to replicate:

1. Control Panel > Users and Groups> Groups > create Group set > Self-enroll

  • set criteria to include: group available (yes)
  • name sign up sheet (i.e. UBC)
  • maximum number of members (2)
  • all students to sign up from group listings page
  • Group set options to (5)

2. Once the set is created, change the availability of the groups "UBC 4 - UBC 5" via edit of each group and set to "group available" to NO.

3. Then under course content add, content folder then individual content sign up sheets via "group" > link to group/set (i.e. UBC), set to self-enroll group. It displays correctly in the Instructor view, however with the student test account - if you go to the signup sheets, you see all 5 groups, instead of the 3.

The workaround is to create single groups instead of group sets.

Blackboard confirmed it's a known issue (reference: LRN-55270). There is no ETA on fix.

Synching the Grade Centre with a Spreadsheet

Synching the Grade Centre with a Spreadsheet

New columns can be added to the Grade Centre by uploading a spreadsheet. However, if grades are added or modified, uploading the spreadsheet again creates a new column instead of modifying the data in the old column.

Grade Centre columns contain a numerical identifier in addition to the column name. These identifiers are not visible unless the column is downloaded from the Grade Centre. To modify an existing column, first download the column (or the entire Grade Centre) so the identifier is included in the column header.

System Caching

Resolution

System Caching

A consistent issue where modifications made at the system & course level in Load Balanced Environment (i.e. making top level tabs available, updates to modules, adding tool links) are not viewable on the user end. The users do not see the affects of the changes immediately regardless of browser used.

Updates usually take effect within a few hours.

TA Course Access

Resolution

TA Course Access

Modifying the TA role so it will not be able to access courses after their end date. This was discussed and agreed at the October 31 2012 ISS Liaison Team meeting. This change also affects the TA's ability to access courses before the start date so they are not able to assist with preparing for the start of term.

Temporarily assigning these TA users a different role like the UBC Secondary Instructor and then switching them back to the TA role once the course starts.

Updating Open Quizzes

Updating Open Quizzes

Connect allows instructors to update assessments questions before, during, and after students have taken it.

Although the systems allows instructors to make changes to questions during a quiz, it is not recommended. We have come across situations where students are unable to submit their quiz and it remains "In Progress".

We recommend that instructors make all the updates to the quiz before releasing it to students in Connect.

Connect does support regrading quizzes in the event instructors makes minor changes to the point value of questions.

Uploaded files are not saved in order

Resolution

Uploaded files are not saved in order

An instructor has uploaded the files in a specific order, but they appear randomly saved in Learn 9.1.

When an attachment is uploaded, an XID is assigned to it. The ordering by assigned XID is the behavior you are seeing when adding new files to an existing list of attachments. The support engineers have confirmed that Blackboard is functioning as designed.

Text Editor (VTBE) Known Issues

Issue

Workaround

Resolution

Text Editor (VTBE) Known Issues
  1. The Math editor is currently not functional. When you insert an equation onto the editor using the WIRIS Formula editor, a broken image link is displayed.
  2. HTML files that contain relative image links display broken image links in the editor. The images will display normally when saved however.
  3. You are no longer able to use the "save as reusable object" feature that was available within the previous editor. This feature has been deprecated by Blackboard.
  4. Embedded links to CSS files are stripped out from the HTML code on save.
  5. Adding a UBC Wiki embed script within the editor (in HTML view) holds when saved. However, if you return to edit an item (or wherever you have added scripts), the script becomes scrambled.
  6. In Chrome (on both Mac and PC), when entering a script, the script contents may not display immediately.
  7. When using the Edit in Blackboard option, the editor may amend poorly formed HTML code. In some cases, this may cause the page to render incorrectly.
  1. No current workaround is available for the Math editor in SP9.
  2. In order to display images correctly in the editor, re-link the images using the respective Permanent URL. The Permanent URL can be found under the 360o View link accessible through the chevron dropdown that appears next to the the image file when you mouse-over the file.
  3. Reusable objects (HTML Objects) can be created within the Content Collection which will be discoverable through the Discover Content button on Content Area pages. You can also link to an HTML file from the Insert Content link button within the editor. This will display as a link in the editor but will display in-line after you click the Submit button.
  4. It is possible to embed links to CSS files or include internal style sheets within HTML objects built from the Content Collection. These HTML objects can then be inserted into other HTML content through the Insert Content link button within the editor. Using this method, the CSS will apply to everything on the page, so referencing css classes is good practice. Note: this method of embedding CSS links through the editor does not work for module content.
  5. In order to ensure that a script holds after editing HTML content with embedded scripts, the script needs to be re-entered before saving.
  6. Refreshing the page will ensure that script content is displayed when using a Chrome browser.
  7. Ensure that HTML is properly formed, either by using the built in editor styles, or by using an HTML editor such as Dreamweaver to auto-correct the code.
  1. Issue appears resolved with new VTBE in SP 11.
  2. Issue resolved in SP11

Uploading multiple files to Content Collection - file dates are not updated

Issue

Resolution

Uploading multiple files to Content Collection - file dates are not updated

When multiple files are uploaded to Bb9.1 using the drag n drop "multiple files" method, only the first file has it's date/time updated to the date and time of upload. The other two files reflects the last date/time it was edited offline, not the date it was added to Bb.

The workaround is that the 360 view can be used to see when a file was originally uploaded to Blackboard (so the "created" date can be after the "last edited" date).
