Jannie van Hees

Faculty of Education, Auckland University, New Zealand

I am a staff member as well as doctoral student at the Faculty of Education. I work at the in-service level primarily with teachers/staff in low socio economic primary schools. My specialisations include: language acqusition of students constrained in expressive / lexical resources, especially orally; interactional and discourse patterns in classrooms; cognitive and linguistic expansion; bilingualism / pluralism.

My doctoral study investigates the English language resources of 5-6 year old students bring into schooling, how that develops over time, and whether classroom interactional / discourse patterns optimise their language acquisition, expanded expression and participation in class. SFL analysis has been used to assess / analyse the students' oral texts and to unpack snapshot lessons using human behaviour analysis software designed to work with video data.
