Title: Let's Talk About...WIKIS!

Brief Description: You've probably heard about wikis before. You're going to say it has something to do with Wikipedia. Yes, that's true but they're more than that. Wikis are a collaborative platform where a diverse range of individuals and groups have used it to run courses, write documentation, create websites or simply plan a vacation. Did you know that UBC has it's own wiki platform on wiki.ubc.ca?

In this discussion-style session, we'll explore what wikis are, what can you do with them and how to start using the UBC wiki. Bring your lunch, bring your questions and let's talk about WIKIS.

Title: Exploring the parallels between open and sustainability education.

Brief description: This discussion will explore the thematic and practical parallels between "open education" and "sustainability education". Concepts such as "the commons", "non-rivalrous resources", "reuse", "inputs and outputs" will be explored from both perspectives. More concrete questions such as the positive and negative environmental effects of online learning, and the implications on human work will also be considered. Can these movements support a more permeable university that engages the wider community? Several projects will be discussed, not the least an open-source, small-pieces-loosely-joined, bottom-up, radical-reuse open content management framework that has enjoyed massive growth at UBC over the past year.

20th

Facilitators: Trish Rosseel & Cindy Underhill

Title: What's Your Digital Tattoo? Issues of Identity, Privacy and Promotion

Brief Description: This workshop will explore issues of digital identity in light of the heightened use of social networking and Web 2.0 tools to create, share and distribute content online. What does your digital tattoo say about you? How much of it do you actively manage? How can you ensure that it accurately reflects you and the work that you do? Come to this session to discuss these questions and explore online tools and resources to help you ink your own tattoo.

Title: Curate & Aggregate: Collecting the Treasures on UBC Wiki

Brief description: There are almost 3,000 pages on the UBC Wiki with almost 300 categories. The wealth of information is vast and keeps on growing. How do you help your students or colleagues find the right information they need?

In this session, we will discuss the different ways you can curate and aggregate information on the wiki. We will talk about techniques such as trancluding other pages so you don't need to recreate information, creating templates to make information creation easier, and using dynamic page lists to automatically list pages under a certain topic. If you have an idea for a course or a project you want to work on, feel free to bring them up for discussion.

Title: Power up with Markup: The Basics of HTML

Brief Description: On your UBC Blog, do you ever wonder what happens if you go to the HTML View? Have you ever checked that box on WebCT Vista that says "Enable HTML"? Have you tried viewing the source code for any website? What exactly is HTML?

Wonder no more and empower yourself with what you can do using HTML or HyperText Markup Language. In this session, you will learn what HTML is and techniques on how to learn more. We'll discuss basic elements and attributes you can use on your blogs and Vista courses. It's time to break free and have more control on your site. Share your questions and issues you encounter, and as a group, we'll find the appropriate solutions using what we learned.

Title: Basics of Video Production

Brief description: Video production, or videography, is the art and service of videotaping, editing, and distributing a finished video product. This can include television production, commercial video production, and corporate and event videos.

Video is becoming a demanded communications medium - everyone wants to see their project, idea, or program on YouTube and watch the view count rise. We'll look at some of the basics you need to consider when looking to produce great video content.

  • This session will focus on the planning/considerations side of video production and less on technical aspects of production.

Title:Comments from the Edge

Brief Description: What is The Edge: http://www.edge.org/? Some might say a “superhero clubhouse for computer scientists and physicists and neurologists and genomists and philosophers and plenty of other people who are actively thinking about the shape of our future (or just plain shaping it)”. Those involved with it call it an online conversation inspired by an annual question. This year it was: What scientific concept would improve
everybody’s cognitive toolkit? This is an opportunity to explore snippets from the online responses to this question and the implications for our technology infused lives.

You don't need to be a scientist to participate -just curious with a willingness to share your thoughts and experiences.

Title: Touch, Play, Learn: Hands-on with Mobile Devices

Brief description:

With a swipe of your fingers, you can turn rotate a planet on its axis. With a simple pinch, you can move the contents of a book. With a blink of your eye, you can see the past around you. Where can you get such power to make things possible?

Join us for an informal discussion on mobile devices in teaching and learning. You can get a chance to learn and play with augmented reality, ebooks and epubs, QR codes and mirroring your iPad to a larger screen. Let us know how you are thinking or planning on using mobile devices in your teaching and learning. If you are already using them, share with us your practice.

The possibilities can be endless!
