About the UBC Campuses

UBC has two campuses: our Vancouver campus and our Okanagan campus. In addition to the Point Grey location, the Vancouver campus includes UBC Robson Square, Great Northern Way, and the affiliated hospital sites. Both campuses provide extensive facilities and events that make working at UBC exciting and rewarding.

The Vancouver Campus

Museums

"I think there is an element of physical and mental health that comes from knowing where you fit in the world. Museums help with that through their exhibitions, research and programming."

-- Wayne Wilson, (UBC graduate, Executive Director, Kelowna Museums) on the importance of museums to the community

UBC is host to many wonderful museums and galleries. When the weather turns poor, there are few places more interesting to spend your lunch break than the museums and galleries around campus. Here are a few links to some of the attractions to get you started.

Gardens

The natural beauty of the Point Grey peninsula is stunning. Nestled within the campus grounds are several gardens that can set the stage for quiet contemplative moments. UBC Botanical Gardens, Nitobe Garden, and the Rose Garden (which, in 2004, was voted by the student body to be one of the best places to kiss) are the main gardens, but there are also many secluded green spaces throughout the campus. If you would like to relax, read, listen to the birds or share conversation with a new friend, these campus oases make the day all that more special. Next time you feel that you need to get away, take a friend and enjoy the incredible efforts of our UBC gardeners.

Movies

Movies at student prices.

The Norm Theatre, located on the Main Concourse of the Student Union Building (next to Bernoulli’s Bagels) is home to popular movies, independent films, screenings, and special events including conferences and lectures.

To find out what is showing weekly, visit the Filmsoc website. Admission is $4.00 (Regular) or $2.00 (FilmSoc members and children ages 3-13.)

UBC Outdoor Art Tour

Since the late 1950s, works of outdoor art have been collected by The University of British Columbia to enrich the campus environment. These pieces of art tell stories about the history of UBC and Vancouver, and are part of an ongoing narrative of the history of art. The Provost’s Committee on University Art, a diverse body of faculty and students, provides leadership on the acquisition, installation and maintenance of art work on campus. With support from the Morris and Helen Belkin Art Gallery, the Committee develops the curatorial vision for the outdoor collection and works to ensure a place for art at UBC in the future.

The UBC Outdoor Art Tour features 27 works, including pieces in the University Art Collection, objects of interest, and artwork that have been commissioned or donated to specific departments and faculties.

Ongoing Events

Thunderbird Games

The UBC Thunderbirds varsity teams are a huge part of the campus experience. Games for all of the Thunderbird teams are inexpensive and open to the UBC community. Check out the Thunderbirds' schedule to find a game to attend.

Concerts

Concerts play a huge role at UBC in bringing together students from across the campus to socialize. Posters in fall and spring showcase the great music at these events. Many of these concerts have been legendary in bringing together great acts.

At the Vancouver campus, the Wednesday noon-hour concert series host to a wide variety of local and international musicians.

At the Okanagan campus, the Minds and Music concert series offers a musical breath of fresh air.

Theatre

How old is the art of theatre?

The earliest example of ceremony and ritual evolving towards theatre comes from ancient Egypt. "Pyramid texts" dating from 2800 to 2400 B.C., contain dramas sending the dead pharaoh off to the underworld. [1]

UBC has a rich history in the theatre arts. Our students perform some of the finest theatre around. Catch a show when you get a chance. Visit the Department of Threatre and Film at the Vancouver campus, or the Performance Events page for events at the Okanagan.

“The real actor - like any real artist- has a direct line to the collective heart.”

— Bette Davis
