About the Work

lavendercloud is a gif of floating hazy purple clouds that are tiled and duplicated side by side, then projected against walls to create a "wallpaper". It is both hosted online and projected during exhibitions against other pieces from the WALLPAPER series 1. Typically the word wallpaper is associated with one of two formats, physical wallpaper which is used to decorate the walls of homes, and digital wallpapers that decorate the background of monitors. This artwork takes the form of both of these, as an online hosted wallpaper and digitally projected wallpapers against real walls, becoming moving and adapting to the space they are projected onto. It is also paired up with other pieces from the WALLPAPERS collection when projected creating a tiled effect.[2]

Emotional Outcomes

The use of repetition through the digital medium of the gif gives a sense of being trapped in a never ending cycle of dark swirling clouds when paired with the dark lavender colour of the piece. When tiled repetitively and projected against a wall with other works from the collection, the piece adapts to the form of the wall it is up against and the perspective changes. It evokes feelings of isolation and solidarity in the digital world which it is confined to, even in it's exhibition, as works that make use of the medium of gif are tethered to the use of digital equipment and cannot exist without them.

Related Works

lavendercloud is part of the overall WALLPAPERS Series 1 collection.[1] Sara Ludy has contributed 9 variations of this work in different colours, all using the same base gif with colours overlayed in various combinations or solid colours. Sara has also contributed to a second series in the same WALLPAPERS collection. Each year the artists plan to add to the existing collection and create new wallpapers.[1]
