LFS Killam Teaching Award

The UBC Killam Prize committee adjudicates the Killam Teaching Prize and the Killam Teaching Assistant Prize within the Faculty of Land and Food Systems (LFS). LFS can award one Teaching Prize and one Teaching Assistant Prize every second year (2016, 2018, etc).

The Killam Teaching Prize is awarded to acknowledge outstanding teaching and learning contributions made by teaching faculty in LFS. The Killam Teaching Assistant Prize is awarded to an outstanding Teaching Assistant who has demonstrated ongoing dedication to and improvement in teaching.

Killam Teaching Prize for Faculty Faculty Teaching Prize Criteria

Among the criteria taken into consideration will be sustained teaching excellence, the ability to motivate students and stimulate critical thinking, and development of innovative approaches to teaching methodology and curricula.

Eligibility

UBC LFS faculty members, including lecturers and sessional lecturers, appointed for a minimum of three years in any of the Faculty’s programs are eligible to be nominated for the prize. Award winners within the last six years may not be nominated (see recent winners below).

Nominations are made by a letter of nomination from students, alumni and/or faculty submitted to: Melanie Train melanie.train@ubc.ca

The nomination letter must include reasons for nominating this candidate, and one or more examples of her/his excellent teaching practice. Nominations for the 2016 prize must be received by October 11, 2015.' [Nominations are accepted at any time, but submissions after the deadlines will be considered for the subsequent prize]. Once nominated, the candidate will be contacted and is expected to coordinate the gathering of the supporting documents listed below.

Selection Process

The prizes will be awarded on recommendation of a committee of faculty and students appointed by the Dean of Land and Food Systems. The Killam Prize committee will consist of a minimum of:

  • previous prize winner
  • LFSUS VP academic
  • Grad student representative
  • Pre-tenure faculty member
  • Chair of Peer Review of Teaching Committee
  • Director of The Learning Centre (chair)

The nominee is responsible for submitting supporting documents for review to the committee, which may include:

  • student teaching evaluations
  • teaching dossier
  • CV
  • summative peer review of teaching by the PRT committee
  • letters of support collected by unbiased third party

All documentation must be submitted by February 1, 2016.
