KFUPM Workshop 2009
King Fahd University of Petroleum & Minerals Concepts of e-Learning Workshop - July 2 - July 10, 2009
Welcome to Vancouver and the University of British Columbia!
We are looking forward to meeting you in Vancouver in a couple of weeks! To help you get prepared for your trip to Vancouver, we have put together some information below regarding your arrival and stay at UBC and Vancouver.
Contact information
You will be hosted while at UBC by the Office of Learning Technology (OLT). During office hours, you can contact OLT’s reception desk at 604-827-4494. You can also call Jeff Miller at 778-288-0324 for any questions or issues that you might have while you are in Vancouver. Jeff will be working with you for most of the workshop. Feel free to call Jeff if you have any issues that come up during your stay in Vancouver.
Arrival Information
You will be arriving at Vancouver International Airport and will need to take a taxi to the University of British Columbia. Taxis can be found just outside of the International Terminal. Taxis charge a metered rate based on time and distance traveled. The approximate fare for travel to downtown Vancouver or to UBC from the airport is $30.00, including taxes.
You can also rent a limousine type vehicle (which seats more people) at the airport. Limojet Gold Express provides exclusive service from the airport 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. The limousines can be picked up directly outside the International arrivals area. Flat rates starting at $39.00 are charged for a YVR-to-downtown Vancouver trip, depending on your choice of limousine type. Limojet Gold Limousine Service, Phone: +1 (604) 273-1331 or +1 800 278-8742, Website: http://www.limojetgold.com
Let your driver know that you are staying at the University of British Columbia in the Walter Gage Residence (West Coast Suites).

Getting around Vancouver
The best methods to travel locally around Vancouver are through the usage of a car, taxi services or through public transportation. UBC is well-connected to public transportation and the West Coast Suites is 1 block away from the main campus bus loop where you can catch express busses (#99) into downtown Vancouver. You can find more information about how to plan trips using the bus/sky-train service here. If you plan on making several trips off-campus by bus, purchase a 10 ticket book of Fare Saves (One Zone) from the Outpost shop in the Student Union Building.
You can also call for a taxi to take you to or from UBC. The following are only a few of the companies that provide this service:
- Black Top Cabs, Phone: +1 (604) 731-1111
- Vancouver Taxi Ltd., Phone: +1 (604) 664-0430
- Yellow Cab Co. Ltd., Phone: +1 (604) 681-1111
Vancouver Tourist Information
Planning your weekend Activity
Vancouver is the largest city in Western Canada, located at the southwestern corner of the province of British Columbia. Situated between the North Shore and coastal mountains and the edge of the Pacific ocean, Vancouver is one of North America's most beautiful cities, and was recently ranked as "the world's most desirable place to live" in a survey of 127 cities performed by the Economist magazine's Intelligence Unit.
Vancouver has almost endless opportunities for tourism. Depending on your interests, you can explore one of Canada’s most energetic and diverse cities or choose to venture into the beautiful natural wilderness areas or parks that lie within and just beyond the city. Here is a link to the Tourism Vancouver site to get you started: http://www.tourismvancouver.com/visitors/
You will have some free time on Sunday, July 5th, as well as on the following weekend, before your departure, so we will provide you with some additional options for things to do once you are in Vancouver.
Vancouver Weather
Vancouver enjoys warm, comfortable summers. June daytime temperatures are usually in the early-20º Celsius, late-60º Fahrenheit range. Evenings can be cool, so it is best to pack a light jacket and/or sweater. You might want to check out Vancouver weather online, and plan ahead!
