Backup and Restore Strategies for WebCT Vista Administrators and Instructors

Section Restores – Who has Access:

  • Only Course Instructors, Group Administrators, and Division Administrators can restore sections.
  • Section Instructors/Designers cannot restore a section.

Online Backups (Back Up Section) - Recommended:

  • Online Backups are a resource-efficient way of creating backups.
  • They are not downloadable. See Copying Section Data for alternatives to moving course data around. (Technically, they are snapshots.)
  • Online Backups are quick and can be created when needed.

When an Online Backup is initiated, it is first added to the backup queue and is completed when the system is ready, usually in a matter of minutes

  • A maximum of 5 Online Backups can be saved per section.
  • There are no space limitations.
  • Online and Offline Backups capture the same data (course content and student data)

Copying Section Data:

  • We recommend using the tools that come with WebCT Vista to copy data from one section to another
  • When creating a blank course section to use the “Copy content from another course” feature, or getting a content from a template, etc.

This process has been implemented within CTC2 when creating a new course shell, the option to copy existing content from another section.

Offline Backups (Save as File) – Not Recommended:

  • Offline Backups are created when a user wants to save an online backup to a file. (User must create an online backup before saving an offline backup.)
  • Anyone who can create an online backup can also save an offline backup.
  • Offline Backups are downloadable, but they are extremely resource intensive and impact the performance of the Vista server’s CPU.
  • Offline Backups take a long time to complete (e.g., 1 hour to back up 2.7 GB)
