Dowry Deaths

Dowry

A dowry is a transfer of wealth from a bride's family to the groom's family. A dowry is some type of valuable item brought by a bride to her husband or his family on their marriage. Dowries include money, property, jewelry, vehicles, furniture, appliances, clothing, and any sort of gift that can be given or requested by the groom's family.

Why is this a Feminist Issue?

Due to dowries, many women have died. Women are murdered or compelled to commit suicide by endless torture and harassment by their husbands and in laws in order to extort remaining or increased dowry. Many times families are unable to provide the dowry that is requested by the groom's family.
