Helpful Tips For Co-op Students Going to Agassiz
Return to: UBC Science Co-op
Purpose: This document was created to help you prepare for your departure to Agassiz. This information may help to prevent some difficulties with paperwork and make it an easier transition for you.
Introduction
Agassiz is a quaint, small town with little to offer in amenities but much to offer in natural beauty. Agassiz is one of the few places in the Fraser Valley where the towns position gives the impression you are directly at the base of Mt. Cheam when you are actually many kilometres away. The views are fantastic and the wildlife is plentiful as eagles, hawks, coyotes and sometimes even bears make appearances.
Insurance
- AMS insurance will cover any of your issues.
- There is security clearance if you are working at PARC Agassiz and this will be sorted out by your employer.
Housing
Rent will run around 500-600$/person/month in Agassiz.
However, if you want to be closer to Vancouver, living in Chilliwack and commuting is very easy and rent runs around 700$/month in Chilliwack depending on location.
Transportation
Living in Agassiz, one only needs a bicycle to get around leaving no costs for transportation.
If you choose to live in Chilliwack, gas would be a minor cost.
Shopping and Entertainment
In terms of food and grocery, Agassiz is very reasonably priced as you can get a filling lunch for around 7$.
Advice
Agassiz is a nice, quiet town to live in. If you are comfortable with simple life, Agassiz is a fine place to live.
If you are more of a "city" person, choosing to live in Chilliwack and commuting may be the best option.
