Select playback resolution/bitrate

It's possible to select the bitrate of a video from the right bottom corner of the player. In Kaltura, bitrate is associated with resolution. Therefore, selecting a higher bitrate auto-selects a higher resolution and vice-versa.

Is it possible to upload multiple videos at the same time?

It is not possible to upload multiple videos from Connect. This applies to all students and instructors. However, in some specific cases, for departmental purposes only, it is possible to upload multiple videos at once. Please contact the Learning Technology Hub if the following requirements are met:

  1. All videos should belong to the same account.
  2. The department/unit should set up an FTP account and have the videos uploaded to a temporary URL via FTP.

The Learning Technology Hub will then import the videos into Kaltura using the temporary URL of each video. If your department needs a bulk-upload, submit a ticket to UBCIT Service Desk; include your use case and any relevant information.

Can I create a playlist in My Media/Course Gallery/Faculty Repository?

There is no playlist capability in Connect. However, you can use My Media (or Faculty Repository) as a kind of playlist by referencing related videos with a unique metadata and then sorting the videos using the search function.

The other option is to group multiple videos into a course tool such as "blog" or "group". Refer to "Add video to a course tool" and "Share videos with a small group of students in a course".

A third option is to use the stand-alone platform (video.ubc.ca) where the user can create playlists. Submit a ticket to UBCIT Service Centre for access requests to video.ubc.ca. Please note that, at this point, videos uploaded to video.ubc.ca will not be accessible in Connect and vice-versa.

Can I upload/record/play back videos on a mobile device?

Currently, Kaltura does not support mobile devices for uploading, recording videos. On some devices, it is possible to play videos.

Add captions to a video

It is not possible to add captions to videos from Connect. however, you can submit a ticket to The Learning Technology Hub and request that your captions be added to your video(s). In your request, please include the following:

  • Your CWL, your email address, and first/last name.
  • The exact title of the video(s) that you want the captions file to be added to.
  • The captions file in SRT or DFXP (XML) format.

Another option is to use the stand-alone platform (video.ubc.ca) where the user can add caption files. Submit a ticket to The Learning Technology Hub for access requests to video.ubc.ca. Please note that, at this point, videos uploaded to video.ubc.ca will not be accessible in Connect and vice-versa.

View the captions of a video

If a video has captions, then a Captions button will display on the video player. Click the Captions button and select the language. The Captions will show along with the video, when the video is being played. For videos that do not have a Captions file, the button will not be displayed.

Copy a course for a new session/semester including instructor’s videos and excluding student-generated videos

  • Create a new course as destination course. Refer to Connect documentation on how to create a new course (you may want to copy your course materials into an existing course).
  • Refer to Connect documentation on how to copy a course. The Course Copy function should copy all Kaltura faculty-generated videos, but it should not copy student-generated videos.

I have a video file that I’m only allowed to display on campus. I need to block off-campus users from viewing it.

Upload the video to your personal video gallery in Connect (My Media). Before sharing the video in a course gallery or displaying the embed code, submit a ticket to UBCIT Service Desk and request to block off-campus users from viewing the video. Include in your request the following information:

  • Your CWL, email address, and first/last name.
  • The exact title of the video.
