Phys341 Lecture 14: Summary and web references

2018.02.02

Textbook 11.1-11.2

Slide List

  1. Review of previous lecture
  2. Real strings:
    1. Have two polarizations (they vibrate from side to side as well as up and down)
    2. Do not have perfectly rigid supports (otherwise we would never hear them)
    3. Are at least somewhat inharmonic – the overtones are not perfect integer multiples of the fundamental frequency
    4. Are plucked by real fingers, and so can never form a perfect triangular shape (plucking with a plectrum gives many more high harmonics)
    5. All these features have implications for real musical instruments, so more later...
  3. Plucking string in different places: Fig. 16-6
  4. Selecting harmonics: Fig. 16-7
