Phys341 Lecture 14: Summary and web references
2018.02.02
Textbook 11.1-11.2
Slide List
- Review of previous lecture
- Real strings:
- Have two polarizations (they vibrate from side to side as well as up and down)
- Do not have perfectly rigid supports (otherwise we would never hear them)
- Are at least somewhat inharmonic – the overtones are not perfect integer multiples of the fundamental frequency
- Are plucked by real fingers, and so can never form a perfect triangular shape (plucking with a plectrum gives many more high harmonics)
- All these features have implications for real musical instruments, so more later...
- Plucking string in different places: Fig. 16-6
- Selecting harmonics: Fig. 16-7
