A scope statement for the project:

Background on the Network: Hastings Sunrise hired a Neighbourhood Food Network Coordinator in the fall 2013 as part of the Greenest City Action Plan. Hastings Sunrise has a rich and deep history in food security initiatives including programs offered at two neighbourhood houses (NH): Kiwassa and Frog Hollow; and two community centres (CC): Hastings and Thunderbird. There is a Steering Committee of 12 people representing the diversity in our neighbourhood with five core ongoing representatives from each of the NH’s/ CC’s and Village Vancouver. Project: Food Asset Mapping and Program Inventory We need to establish the baseline of the food assets in Hastings Sunrise. This inventory will inform policies, programs and services around food issues. There are two components: a map may include the locations of grocery stores, grocery delivery, grocery shopping assistance, holiday meals, meal delivery, community (and other models such as urban farming and young agrarian) gardens, community meals, emergency food, parks and green spaces, farmers markets, produce market programs (CSA’s), restaurants (with price point), free/low cost food programs and community food partner organizations; and an INVENTORY of current food programs and services offered by the food partners and other groups including churches and places of worship.

Main project goals and objectives:

• To collect data; enter in a database that can create a visual representation of the current food assets in Hastings Sunrise. The map may be available in hard copy or online. • To establish a foundation or base for current food assets in Hastings Sunrise.

Recommended research method(s):

• Internet: best practices globally to recommend the technology to use • BIA’s: restaurants and grocery stores • Internet: community, urban gardens • Survey: on foot/email to determine culturally appropriate food • Food Network Advisory Committee and residents • Liaise with LFS 350 group doing the map in LMRP or past mapping projects

Potential information sources:

Expected outcome(s):

• Data collected • Data entry process created • Data entered into database • Visual representation created (a map)!
